# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wooden: Why It Happens

Leave your motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, carried out just where your car stands around Wooden, is normally all it takes if found before your motor runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Plenty of modern diesels around Hill, like those in Wooden, run on two fluids; the motor takes only the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of cars. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Wooden: how it occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Vineyard Vale before work, or in the car park at Woodbridge Inn Hotel on the way home: that is where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Moreton or the middle of Wooden, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Cold Inn or a forecourt around Wooden.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is when the filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Saundersfoot? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, not when the light goes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever around Pembrokeshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Coppins Park.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Leave out step five entirely.

## Wooden: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

Leave your ignition off too, since on many diesels it by itself starts the pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Lifestyle Express, the another forecourt nearby or anywhere else.

Your own drive in Wooden is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

Wooden lies under 50 miles from the M4; there, take the next junction.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Wooden makes a smaller job than heading under 50 miles towards St Davids — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers turn up in Wooden, what takes place?

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, near Winding House or on your own drive.

Both the work and the quote rest on three replies — which fluid, what amount, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or changed as needed.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unrun cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

A postcode starting SA69 9 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to move the vehicle.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Kilgetty Begelly Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to Jubilee Park and Nature Trail, a drive.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Church of St Mary.

## In short, for Wooden motorists

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Pembrokeshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — and so leave it off and ring 0333 366 0103.
