# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodhall: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Woodhall.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels in Handside, as well as Woodhall, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two together under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Woodhall?

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste follows from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Gooseacre, or on the way home in the car park at The Peartree.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once started, carries on.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Peartree or bang in the centre of Woodhall.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Woodhall forecourt or a driveway out in Welwyn Garden City, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are frequently blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if your filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Welwyn Garden City.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Hertfordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Mill Green Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Both behind one flap? So make sure the lid on your diesel side stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler remained closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Woodhall: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

On a forecourt — Shell, Esso or any other — the staff will normally help push your car clear, if you ask.

On your own drive in Woodhall? Then the vehicle remains put.

Already run? Stop when it is sensible, then turn off.

Woodhall lies under 3 miles from the A1(M); there, use the first exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Woodhall is less work than a run of under 10 miles towards St Albans, and so tell us.

## Woodhall: what happens when we get there

Wherever your car came to rest, be it outside Holwell Primary School, near The Salvation Army - Welwyn Garden City or at home, our van comes to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three answers — which liquid, which quantity, and whether it's run — so our technicians ask.

That quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## Woodhall and Hertfordshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Woodhall is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Hatfield Hyde and Hall Grove among them, across the AL postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts AL7 3, and our van arrives quickest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Woodhall Community Centre, a lay-by on the way to King George V Fields, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of The Catholic Church of Our Lady Queen of Apostles.

## The short version for Woodhall motorists

Read the cap before you tip.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway, leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it stands, anywhere around Hertfordshire.
