# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodhill: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Woodhill.

Reading before the event? Then the rest explains why it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around North Weston, as well as Woodhill, run on two liquids; the engine gets just the diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of cars. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Woodhill: how it takes place

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Fircliff Park before work, or in the car park outside Hall & Woodhouse on the way home.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes seconds, be it out in Portishead or right in the heart of Woodhill.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Woodhill forecourt or a driveway out in Sheepway, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- On many cars, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Check for it.

- The handbook says where it is when your filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Avonmouth? Check with the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Anywhere in Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of South View, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel filler remained shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodhill already?

Don't start the motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Keep your ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on by itself starts your fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Shell or the Sainsbury's, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own driveway in Woodhill, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When your motor has run already, pull over safely then turn the vehicle off.

Woodhill lies under 3 miles from the M5; on it, use the next exit.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Woodhill is less a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Bristol, so tell us.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive in Woodhill

Our engineers come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Portishead Primary School, close to Portishead Power Station Gate or on your own drive.

We ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it has run, because those answers decide this work and the quote.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and nothing clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it is running properly.

If the engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## Woodhill and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Dry Hill and West Hill are among the towns around Woodhill, a residential suburb, that the same vans cover, over BS postcodes.

Quickest of all: quote a BS20 7 postcode for the van.

Moving your car isn't needed.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Rodmoor Rose Gardens, a side street close to Crouch: our engineers drain it where it sits.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of The Association of Portishead Bowling Clubs, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## Woodhill people: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere across Somerset.
