# Woodhorn: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave your engine off then keep the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and nothing happens till your engine pulls it through.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Woodhorn, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the motor has been run.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Woodhorn, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about how much, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting NE63 9, or the name of the nearest street, brings the van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Shifting your car even a few yards is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short way along A197 is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Draining the tank yourself by the road is not worth trying.

Rolling your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, wherever Woodhorn forecourt you are on, the Asda or any other.

On the drive, your car remains exactly where it was left.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

From a dedicated tank it goes straight to your exhaust, treating what the motor emits.

No part in an injection pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was meant to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like diesel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

A motor topped up on a drive in North Seaton yesterday evening and left unstarted is the straightforward case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — though once the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, directly from the bottom of the tank.

Once it is drawn in, the harm takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; and, since it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

Pipes carrying AdBlue spell damage overnight for a car parked around Woodhorn. Just inside that tank, it stays the same.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

A fault of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the BP.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it's in your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Crystals and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue splits back out of the diesel, and so thinning it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Hirst or the centre of Woodhorn alike.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only in the tank, the easiest section of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has come to rest in Northumberland.

## Woodhorn: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many vehicles keep the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple after dark.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up takes place in a hurry outside NCEA Grace Darling CofE Primary School.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Woodhorn Mews.

Else, in dim light outside the pub in the village, the vehicle is refilled by someone using that flap the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles get it the most.

Same mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — wherever you are around Woodhorn or the remainder of Northumberland.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Woodhorn, and the engine started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been pulled through your filter and the fuel lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Perhaps returning from Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, or midway across Woodhorn, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash the dash or stall.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Keep the car off rather than restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Woodhorn sits under 15 miles from the A167(M); if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Woodhorn to the car park by Woodhorn Church Museum is a very different job from a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 25 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to flush once the engine has been started, and we do all of it where your car has come to a stop.

If it is spotted early, permanent damage is very unusual.

## Woodhorn: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest in Woodhorn — a forecourt, a lay-by, a driveway, a road beside Newbiggin by the Sea — our van comes to the vehicle.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those replies determine this work.

Then the tank is emptied where your car sits, and so the contaminated fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of your vehicle comes last, once clean diesel is added and the filter gets flushed or, where needed, replaced.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour visit once we get there, provided the engine has not run.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

The last step is to prime your system on new diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay outside Ashington or a driveway around Woodhorn, that is where we start the engine and you drive off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs properly before our engineers leave.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Woodhorn and where it is

Woodhorn is a small coastal hamlet in Northumberland, situated near the towns of Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Lynemouth. Woodhorn lies at a low elevation of around 16 metres, close to the North Sea coast and within commuting distance of Newcastle upon Tyne. Woodhorn has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Woodhorn is part of a wider rural landscape that stretches along the Northumberland coast.

## Woodhorn and Northumberland: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Woodhorn go to teams that cover the towns around it — Woodhorn Demesne, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea as well as Lynemouth — and most of Northumberland beyond, across NE postcodes.

Assuming won't help by a border or anywhere tricky to describe; ring and check.

No towing is needed. In Woodhorn, a rural hamlet, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is drained where it stands, whether on a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Woodhorn

Each job is different, and so no fixed quote would be fair.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Northumberland Museum and Archives.

For that reason, each enquiry from Woodhorn opens with the identical trio — which fluid was put in, how much, whether the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Given those replies, the range narrows to a single firm figure.

The price is quoted on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Still beside the car around Woodhorn?

Not touching the car is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus whether it ran is everything our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder throughout Northumberland, Woodhorn too.
