# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodhouse: Why It Occurs

Keep your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, if your motor has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where your vehicle is around Woodhouse.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest covers why it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven about Woodhouse and Woodhouse Cliff carry another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Far less frequently, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Woodhouse?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Clarendon Road, or heading home in the car park at The Library.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Whether it occurs in Hyde Park or the middle of Woodhouse, it's the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Buslingthorpe or a forecourt in Woodhouse, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it is when the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Burley Park, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Raglan Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Woodhouse?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Jet, BP or another — the attendants will normally help push the car clear, if you ask.

Your own drive around Woodhouse is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the Inner Ring Road, under a mile from Woodhouse, that means the next junction.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Woodhouse is less a job than a run of under a mile to Leeds, and so tell us.

## When our technicians arrive around Woodhouse, what occurs?

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Statue of Queen Victoria, or by Quarry Mount Primary School.

We ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine this work and our price.

That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is emptied and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel is added, and then your car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
