# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodlands

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is in Woodlands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds the engine — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Woodlands and Grahamston carry a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally comes out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Woodlands: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Woodlands Crescent before work, or in the car park at Woodside Inn on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a rental car, a new motor or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

Whether it happens in Arnothill or the middle of Woodlands, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Look at these first, on a forecourt in Woodlands or a driveway over in Callendar Park. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually do not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check when you pick up a rental or fleet car — from Falkirk High's car park, say — not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere in Falkirk the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never in a rush by Hodge Street on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then look again — confirm your diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Woodlands already?

Brief list, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

The staff at Morrisons, Esso or another forecourt will normally help to push the vehicle clear if you ask.

Your own driveway in Woodlands is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction means the place to come off when you are on the M9, under 3 miles from Woodlands.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Stirling, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Woodlands.

## Our arrival in Woodlands, and what happens next

Our van reaches the car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Peoples Church Falkirk, or outside the local primary school.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since the answers determine the work and the price.

You hear that quote on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Draining that tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes away by itself. That is why it matters more.

The filter flushed or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a check of the vehicle.

Before we leave, our technicians start the engine and confirm that it's running correctly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## About Woodlands itself

Woodlands is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Falkirk, with a relatively low elevation of 32 metres. Woodlands lies close to the nearby settlements of Arnothill and Bantaskin, and is within commuting distance of Stirling, which is approximately 9.8 miles away. Woodlands is characterised by its predominant housing type, which is mainly flat.

## AdBlue drains around Woodlands, and Falkirk beyond

Being a residential suburb, Woodlands has the same vans as nearby areas — Falkirk, Bantaskin — all the way across FK postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a FK1 5 postcode for the van.

The car remains where it is.

Draining takes place on the spot, whether a driveway, a road near Kobe Osaka Karate, or a layby towards Blinkbonny Park.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Howgate Shopping Centre? Close to a county line? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.

## Woodlands motorists: the short version

Before you pour, read the cap.

Even so AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will drain it where it stands, wherever in Falkirk: keep the vehicle off and phone 0333 366 0103.
