# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodlands: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Woodlands.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows explains why it comes about and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven round Woodlands and Hillhead hold a second fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each filling station visit, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Woodlands

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Willowbank Street, or outside Dram! on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes seconds, be it in Kelvingrove Park or bang in the heart of Woodlands.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Finnieston or a forecourt in Woodlands, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when your filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Check when you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Charing Cross (Glasgow)'s car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — anywhere it is around Glasgow City — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Woodlands Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and look once more — confirm the diesel filler remained closed the whole time. After that, start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Woodlands?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Sainsbury's or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump.

At home around Woodlands? Then your car stays where it is.

Where your motor has been run by now, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

On the M8, under a mile from Woodlands, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Woodlands is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers arrive around Woodlands

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near Lobey Dosser Statue or on your own drive.

The answers decide this work and our price, and so our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The motor is started next and tested to make sure it runs properly, all before we go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once we are there.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Woodlands itself

Woodlands is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Glasgow City, with an elevation of 32 metres above sea level. Woodlands is located approximately 1.6 miles from Glasgow city centre and is near notable places such as Kelvingrove Park and Anderston. Woodlands has a population of around 16087 people and predominantly consists of flat-type housing. Woodlands is also close to the neighbouring area of Woodside.

## AdBlue drains in Woodlands and across Glasgow City

Over G postcodes, the teams that cover Woodlands — a residential suburb — work the nearby spots too, Anderston and Woodside among them.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting G3 6.

The vehicle does not need to move.

Anywhere it sits — beside Woodlands Methodist Church, in a lay-by heading to Willowbank Community Garden, on a drive — that's where it is drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Eye? Close to a county line? Asking is better than guessing, so phone.

## The short version for Woodlands motorists

Before you pour, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere around Glasgow City, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103.
