# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodlands? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep the engine off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when your fuel system draws it in.

In Woodlands, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Woodlands: the first few minutes

Do these:

- Take your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting TW7 6, or just the name of a street nearby, so call from the spot.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short distance along Worton Road.

- Do not try to drain it yourself at the kerbside.

The staff working at any Woodlands filling station — the Esso among them — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

It sinks, because it's heavier than diesel, and pools low where the pickup takes its supply from.

A car topped up on a drive in St Margarets overnight and not started since counts as the straightforward one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — though once the engine turns, that's what is pulled first, straight from the bottom of your tank.

After it's drawn in, the damage comes in two forms.

What remains when the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's cleared out.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting in Woodlands with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it's just inside your tank, nothing changes.

Then there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Tesco's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole issue.

It mixes with your diesel, and whilst it is in your tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable liquid.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether the vehicle sits in Lampton or the centre of Woodlands, firing it up "to see" costs more with AdBlue than almost any other slip, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Not run? Then the AdBlue waits just in your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has stopped in Greater London.

## Woodlands: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

A container bought when heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Spring Grove Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Riverside Walk.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside The Royal Oak, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented cars, brand-new motors, company vehicles, or the spare car in a family with both fuels: the least known vehicles see it most.

Leave it off: that's the first response to the same slip, wherever around Woodlands or the rest of Greater London you happen to be.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodlands?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Through your filter, along the pipework, and — with any running time — into the injection pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Watch for rough running, exhaust smoke, lost power, lights on your dash, or a stall — returning from Thornbury Playing Fields, say, or part way across Woodlands.

No starting it again to test: pull over when safe, then turn it off.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Woodlands sits under 3 miles from the M4; if you were on it, leave by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Woodlands to the car park by St. Mary's Church is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under 10 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where your car has stopped.

When it is noticed early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Woodlands?

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped around Woodlands: a side street close to Isleworth Bowls Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three answers, and our engineers ask for before all else — what was put in, the quantity, and if the motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is emptied, right there.

A full flush counts far more with AdBlue than after petrol, since what remains will not clear out by itself.

After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. Then fresh diesel, then a check of the car.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes last.

Then we start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space outside Isleworth or a driveway in Woodlands.

Before we go, we confirm it is running smoothly with fresh diesel in.

No garage is required at any stage, with the whole job done then and there.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

## About Woodlands itself

Woodlands is a suburban area in Greater London, situated on the riverside with an elevation of around 12 metres. Woodlands lies approximately 9.6 miles from Westminster and is near other suburban areas such as Isleworth and Spring Grove. Woodlands has a population of around 7026 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Woodlands is also close to the town of Hounslow, which provides local amenities and services.

## Woodlands and Greater London: AdBlue drains across the area

Our teams that answer AdBlue calls around Woodlands also cover the places round it, Isleworth, Spring Grove and Hounslow among them, and most of Greater London beyond, across the TW postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

A mobile service suits Woodlands, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring the car to us, since our technicians empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Woodlands: the cost of fixing it

Because the jobs vary, a single price would not be honest.

Whether your engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of the vehicle, since an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind St. John the Baptist's, Isleworth.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, each enquiry from Woodlands opens with three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

With those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear the quote on the phone. And you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Still next to your car in Woodlands?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Woodlands or anywhere within Greater London, once you ring 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran.
