# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Woodlands? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only comes when your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Woodlands, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before the engine has run.

Before anything, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Woodlands: the first few minutes

Do:

- Take the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and roughly how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call us from where you are. A postcode starting SK15 2, or the name of the nearest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to reposition the car.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so leave the car off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't thin it.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way up Mottram Old Road.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

At a forecourt in Woodlands, whether it's the Texaco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

At home, the car remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

The intake sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to be pulled through. Until then it waits beneath your diesel, which is why a car topped up in Matley last night and never switched on remains the straightforward case, as long as nobody touches your key.

From there it causes two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filter elements and tiny passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, every part it reaches keeps suffering for as long as it stays inside.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight in Woodlands leaves things worse. In your tank only, time costs nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Tesco and you have an issue of thin fuel.

Mixed into your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat for now; running the motor does the harm.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Whether the car is in Copley or the centre of Woodlands, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue sits just in your tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, anywhere your car has stopped around Greater Manchester.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodlands: how it ends up there

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors waits right next to the diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it is not the forecourt: someone buys a bottle heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Stalyhill Junior School.

After work, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Linden Road.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park outside Waggon and Horses, and someone opening that flap the first time.

The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, brand-new cars, company ones, and the spare motor of a home with both fuels.

Wherever you're around Woodlands or the remainder of Greater Manchester, it's the same error and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Woodlands, and the motor started?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked along, and any running carries it on to the injection pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may appear, perhaps midway across Woodlands or coming back from Cheetham Park.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M67, under 3 miles from Woodlands, at the first junction and stop somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, and so heading towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, gives a far bigger job than hopping across Woodlands to the car park by Bower Fold.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

We do all of the flushing where your car has come to a stop, and once the motor has been run there is more of it.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Woodlands?

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Woodlands: a side street near St Peter's RC Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the job, so first we ask which fluid got in, about the amount, plus whether the motor has turned over.

On the spot, that tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea leave as one.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush away unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters far more here than for petrol.

A test of the car follows last, after fresh diesel is added and the fuel filter is flushed or, if necessary, swapped.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with fresh diesel comes last.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, at Stalybridge or on a driveway in Woodlands.

It's tested on new diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our technicians leave.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains in Woodlands and across Greater Manchester

Mottram Rise, Bower Fold and Fern Bank are among the places around Woodlands that the same teams serve, along with much of Greater Manchester further out, throughout the SK postcode area.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than guessing.

Woodlands is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodlands: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a flat figure wouldn't be fair.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Saint Paul's Parish Church.

Before a figure, never afterwards, each call from Woodlands begins with three checks: the liquid, the amount, and if the engine ran.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Before a van sets off, you are told the quote by phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van arrives.

## Still next to the car around Woodlands?

Then, do nothing — that is the most helpful step there is.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Woodlands or anywhere around Greater Manchester.
