# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodlands

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, keep the motor off and leave the ignition off.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

The harm starts once it's pulled through the lines — it won't ignite, and it will not blend with diesel.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Woodlands.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Woodlands

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a L27 4 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- Moving your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to fire up the motor.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, and so keep it off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel won't weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short way along Winster Drive.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle off the island if you are on a forecourt in Woodlands, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

On that drive, the car stays exactly as it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the engine.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's injected into the exhaust stream to treat the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like diesel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Belle Vale overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it will be first through once your motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps running on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

A car left sitting in Woodlands with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Esso, and this issue is thinned fuel.

No harm is done while it stays unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Whether the vehicle sits in Gateacre or the heart of Woodlands, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than almost any other mistake, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no different from petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and your tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Merseyside your car is standing.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Woodlands?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside St Gregory's Catholic Primary School.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Beesands Close, as the day ends.

Or someone new to that flap refills the vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park outside Brickwall PH.

Rented vehicles, new motors, company vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known vehicles see it the most.

Same slip, an identical first response — leave it off — anywhere you are in Woodlands or the rest of Merseyside.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Woodlands?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It's been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

You may notice the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Netherley Park or halfway across Woodlands.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M62, under a mile from Woodlands, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

A quick hop across Woodlands to the car park by Woodlands Community Centre is one thing; driving towards Liverpool, under 10 miles away, is another, because every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the engine has been running.

Very seldom does it leave permanent damage when it is spotted quickly.

## Woodlands: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

We come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Woodlands: a side street close to Netherley Sports and Social Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers decide the work, so first we ask what went in, about what quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then the tank is drained where your car sits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than for petrol.

Testing your vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers arrive, provided the motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking space at Halewood or a driveway around Woodlands, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off.

It is tested on fresh diesel to confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## About Woodlands, for a moment

Woodlands is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the River Mersey at an elevation of around 13 metres. Woodlands lies approximately 6 miles south east of Liverpool city centre, within the wider Liverpool urban area. Woodlands is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, reflecting the typical architectural style of many North West England suburban areas. Woodlands is close to nearby places such as Netherley and Tarbock Green.

## Woodlands and Merseyside: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the L postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue jobs in Woodlands serve much of Merseyside as well, Netherley, Tarbock Green and Whitefield Lane End included.

Ring and ask rather than guess when you're by a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

Woodlands is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Woodlands: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for a technician to reach safely than a tight space behind Christ Church.

With that in mind, every enquiry from Woodlands opens by asking the identical trio — which fluid went in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of a figure.

Once they are answered, a range turns into a single firm figure.

Our quote is given during the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is travelling, check your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Woodlands: still alongside the car?

In that case, do nothing — that's the most helpful move available.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us it's AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Woodlands or anywhere around Merseyside.
