# Woodlands: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your engine has not turned, it's emptied and fully flushed where the vehicle sits around Woodlands.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to your engine — but many modern diesels seen around Woodlands and Letham hold a second fluid too.

The exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, poured by someone who has to stop and think which cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Woodlands?

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Oakbank Road before work, or in the car park outside Ghlas Bar heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and if it's gone, limp mode follows.

Unfamiliar cars come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company motors put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Burghmuir or the middle of Woodlands, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Perth or a forecourt around Woodlands, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- On many vehicles, the size tells: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it lives if the filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check as you collect a hire car or fleet car — from Perth's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Anywhere in Perth and Kinross the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Fairies Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Woodlands?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Morrisons, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Woodlands.

Already started? Stop when it's safe, then switch off.

Woodlands lies under a mile from the M90; on it, use the next exit.

A short hop across Woodlands is a smaller job than a run towards Perth, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Woodlands: what happens when we arrive

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside the local primary school, near Oakbank Community Centre or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since those answers decide both work and price.

Nobody heads out until you have heard our quote over the phone.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and none of that washes away on its own, however long it is left.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Then our technicians fire it up and make sure it runs correctly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once we arrive, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

Fastest of all: give a PH1 1 postcode for our van.

The car stays where it is.

Anywhere it stands — near General Accident Glacial Boulder, in a layby en route to Cherrybank Gardens, on a drive — that is where it is drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Pitheavlis Castle? By a county line? Checking is better than guessing, and so ring.
