# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodmill: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully flushed where the car sits in Woodmill.

Here in advance? In that case the rest explains why it happens and how to prevent it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that is what plenty of modern diesels around Woodmill and Hoar Cross run, with diesel feeding the engine.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust gas and cleans it.

Each tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less regularly, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Woodmill: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Yoxall Road before work, or in the car park at the pub in the village on the way home.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Woodmill or out in Far Hoarcross.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Woodmill forecourt or a driveway over in Weaverslake, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — at Rugeley Trent Valley's car park, perhaps — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are around Staffordshire — a routine to use.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, engine stopped, and not rushed beside Maker Lane on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its own spout.

- Before you start the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Step five stays out.

## Woodmill: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the motor.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the another forecourt nearby, ask the attendants to help roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Woodmill, leave it where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Come off the M6 Toll — under 10 miles out of Woodmill — at the next exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Woodmill is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Lichfield — so say roughly how far it went.

## Woodmill: what happens when our engineers get there

Wherever the car has stopped, whether by Yoxall St Peter's CofE Primary School, near The Church of the Holy Angels or on your own drive, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether it's run, because the answers settle this work and our quote.

No one heads out until you've heard our price by phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more.

After the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, we fire it up and confirm that it's running properly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run take roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
