# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woodstock

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle sits in Woodstock, is usually what it needs if caught before the engine runs.

Here before the event? Then what follows explains why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Woodstock and Potterswood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Woodstock: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom causes it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a drive off Shilton Close before work, or in the car park outside The Old Plough heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: an unfamiliar motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Woodstock or out in Warmley Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Woodstock forecourt or a driveway over in Warmley, take a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many vehicles show what goes in each filler right there.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Keynsham, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Gloucestershire that is.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never rushed by Penard Way on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then check again — making sure your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Step five is out.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Woodstock?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Diluting it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Esso, Asda or another forecourt will usually help to push your car away when you ask.

Your own driveway in Woodstock is where it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Woodstock sits under 5 miles from the M32; there, use the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Woodstock is less work than a run of under 5 miles towards Bristol, and so tell us.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Woodstock

By Courtney Primary School, near The Park Centre Kingswood or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies decide this work and our quote.

No one heads out until you've heard the quote by phone.

Then your tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter has been flushed — or renewed, if required — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle gets tested.

After that we start the car and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need roughly half an hour after we arrive.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.
