# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Woolrooms

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and never combines with diesel; damage just starts once your pump begins drawing it.

In Woolrooms, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, just where your car is.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Woolrooms, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- So no one can switch the ignition on, take your keys away.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what went in and about how much.

- Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting LE67 8, or simply the name of a street close by, and so call from the spot.

Things not to do:

- Shifting your vehicle even a few yards is no reason to start the motor.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not thin it.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch down The Woolrooms.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the verge.

The attendants working at any Woolrooms forecourt — the Shell included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the car just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your engine.

Stored in a separate tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was meant to go that way.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than blending — quite different from fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Peggs Green last night, and has not been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

After it's sucked in, the damage takes two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it hits for as long as it remains there.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Woolrooms. Just inside the tank, it stays stable.

Diesel protects the injection pump and every injector as it flows; water offers no lubrication, and that is a second form of damage.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt makes the fuel watery — that is the whole issue.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

It can't just be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits back out — and the following fill will not rinse away deposits or corrosion. So the flush counts more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the heart of Woolrooms or out in Griffydam, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Leicestershire the vehicle has come to rest, an unrun engine leaves the AdBlue still inside the tank: the simplest part of a fuel system to empty.

## Woolrooms: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, occasionally under a single flap — can look the same. Nobody intends it; many layouts allow it.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a container bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up happens in a hurry outside Griffydam Primary School.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a driveway close to Stoney Lane.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside George Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new cars, fleet motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars see it the most.

Same mistake, same first step — keep it off — wherever you happen to be in Woolrooms or the remainder of Leicestershire.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Woolrooms?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Via the filter, through the lines, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it has gone.

Perhaps coming back from New Lount Nature Reserve, or midway across Woolrooms, the engine might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up the dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Woolrooms lies under 10 miles from the M1; if you were on it, leave by the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Woolrooms to park beside Hough Tower Mill and a drive of under 15 miles towards Derby are very separate jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Caught quickly, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Woolrooms: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near St George, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station around Woolrooms, and the van comes to it.

The job rests on three replies, and our technicians get before all else — what was put in, the amount, and if the engine has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out together when the tank is drained, right there.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

A test of the car follows at the end, after fresh diesel is added and your filter is cleaned or, if needed, swapped.

Not run? Then count on about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the final step.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, outside Loughborough or on a drive in Woolrooms.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

Since the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

## About Woolrooms, for a moment

Woolrooms is a small suburban area in Leicestershire, situated inland at an elevation of around 102 metres. Woolrooms lies near the towns of Coleorton and Outwoods, and is close to the larger city of Derby. Woolrooms has a population of approximately 654 people, and is characterised by predominantly detached housing.

## AdBlue drains across Leicestershire, Woolrooms included

Coleorton, Outwoods and Gelsmoor are among the towns near Woolrooms that the same vans reach, together with most of Leicestershire beyond, throughout the LE postcode area.

Phone and ask rather than guess if you are by a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No towing is needed. In Woolrooms, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is drained where it stands, be it in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Woolrooms?

Not one flat price could be honest, because each job is different.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the vehicle is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight space behind St John.

Before any figure, not after, each enquiry from Woolrooms begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus if it ran.

When they are known, a range turns into a single firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing in advance.

Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## Alongside the vehicle in Woolrooms, still?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Woolrooms or wherever within Leicestershire, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
