# Wrafton: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Chemically, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the fuel system draws it in.

If the motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully flushed where your car sits in Wrafton.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Wrafton: the first few minutes

Things to do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull your keys away.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting EX33 2, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- The ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to run the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue separates out rather than blending.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way down Wrafton Road.

- Draining your tank on your own by the road isn't one to try.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Wrafton forecourt you are on, the Murco included.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, treating what the motor emits.

A fuel pump isn't designed to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Poured in with the diesel, it stays separate instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the very place the intake draws from.

Easiest of all: one that got AdBlue in Chivenor last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once the motor starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

Two kinds of damage follow from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a vehicle sitting around Wrafton with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just in that tank, nothing changes.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the main issue.

No harm is done as long as it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Boode or the middle of Wrafton.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on a fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — anywhere around Devon the vehicle sits.

## Wrafton: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel cap, now and then under a single flap — may look the same. Nobody intends it; many designs allow it.

A container picked up while driving home and poured in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the typical route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Southmead School the refill is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Westlands.

Another version: darkness, the car park outside Williams Arms, and a driver using that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Devon, Wrafton included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Wrafton?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

You may see your motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from North Devon Athletics Centre or halfway across Wrafton.

Stop when it is safe. Switch off. Leave the car off rather than restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 50 miles from Wrafton, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible rather than pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue further into your system. That is why crossing Wrafton to park near Rescue Helicopter Viewing Area and a drive of under 50 miles towards Swansea are such different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our engineers do all of the rinsing where your car has ended up, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

When it's spotted soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

## Wrafton: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped in Wrafton: a side street near South Street Church, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

The work rests on three answers, which our engineers get before all else — which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether the motor has run.

Then the tank is drained where the car stands, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the whole system is flushed right through because what remains will not wash out by itself.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Engine not run? Then expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Whether it is a parking space at Barnstaple or a driveway in Wrafton, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

It is checked on new diesel to confirm it runs properly before our technicians leave.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## About Wrafton and where it is

Wrafton is a small coastal village in Devon, situated near the towns of Braunton and Barnstaple. Wrafton lies close to the River Taw estuary, at a low elevation of around 11 metres above sea level. Wrafton is surrounded by nearby places such as Velator and Heanton Punchardon, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock.

## Wrafton and Devon: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Wrafton go to vans that serve the places around it — Velator, Heanton Punchardon plus Braunton — and most of Devon further out, throughout EX postcodes.

Near a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Asking is better than guessing, and so phone.

Wrafton is a coastal village, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wrafton: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so no single quote is fair.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind St Augustine's.

Ahead of any quote, never after, each enquiry from Wrafton opens with the same three questions: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## In Wrafton and still next to the car?

Not touching your car is, then, the most useful thing open to you.

Keys out, motor off, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, plus whether it ran is all our engineers need. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Devon, Wrafton included.
