# Wyken: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, keep the ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Wyken, catching it before the engine turns normally leaves draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels in Potters Green, as well as Wyken, carry on two fluids; the motor gets just your diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of motors have a single flap for both, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Far less often, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wyken: how it occurs

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Ansty Road, or outside The New Pippin on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Walsgrave on Sowe or the heart of Wyken: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Upper Stoke or a forecourt in Wyken, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it is when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Coventry Arena.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across West Midlands, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Arch Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wyken already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself starts your fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Murco, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump.

On your own drive around Wyken? Then your car stays where it is.

Where your engine has run already, stop safely and turn it off.

Wyken sits under 3 miles from the M69; there, use the first junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Wyken is less work than a run of under 3 miles to Coventry, so say.

## What happens when we arrive around Wyken

Outside Wyken Croft Primary School, close to Caludon Castle or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

We ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, because those replies determine this work and our quote.

The quote is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, where needed, replaced; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If the motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

Wherever it sits — near Highest Point, in a lay-by en route to Caludon Castle Park, on a drive — that's where it is cleared.
