# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in York: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around York.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about York and Clementhorpe carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There's a filler on every tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in York

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Duncombe Place before work, or in the car park at The Three Legged Mare on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's the second factor: a new car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The Groves or the heart of York: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Tang Hall or a forecourt in York, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across North Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside High Petergate at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; until then, pour gently using the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel cap remained closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## York: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on plenty of diesels it by itself starts your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the BP or anywhere else.

Your own driveway around York is the place it stays.

Already run? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the A1(M), under 15 miles from York.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across York is less a job than a run of under 25 miles towards Ripon, and so say.

## When our engineers turn up around York, what happens?

Outside St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School - a Catholic Voluntary Academy, near Boer War Memorial or on your own driveway: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run, since the replies decide this work and the price.

The quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining the tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters here: the crystals build up, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes out on its own, however long it sits.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Next we fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

If the motor has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

The vehicle stays put.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to York Minster Undercroft, a lay-by on the way to Dean's Park, a drive.

Assuming doesn't help behind St Michael le Belfrey, close to a border, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and ask.
