# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ystradowen? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then keep your motor off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it's sucked through your pump — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

If the engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and thoroughly flushed where the car sits in Ystradowen.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Ystradowen, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Remove your keys, and that prevents anyone switching the electrics on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the amount, and so don't bin it away.

- Call just where you are. Say a SA9 2 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Never do these:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the engine.

- Many diesels run their pump the instant your ignition comes on, so leave the vehicle off.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short distance along Pen y Graig Road is too far to drive the car.

- Draining your tank yourself beside the road isn't one to try.

The attendants working at any Ystradowen forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will usually lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

On your own driveway, don't move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

It does not blend. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Pen-Rhiw-fawr last night and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it will be first through if your engine runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it attacks some metals in the fuel system, and keeps going until it's cleared out.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting in Ystradowen with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it is just in that tank, it doesn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and every injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a separate kind of damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's frequently worse than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that's the whole problem.

Blended into your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; running your motor does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it separates again — and the next tankful will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Ystradowen or out in Rhiwfawr, does more harm than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Not run? Then the AdBlue sits just inside your tank, the simplest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Carmarthenshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Ystradowen?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, not at the filling station.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside the local primary school the top-up is rushed.

Someone tips the bottle in at home, right off Heol Ty Gwyn, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside The George, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired motors, brand-new motors, fleet motors, or the second car in a home with one of each: the least known cars see it the most.

Anywhere around Carmarthenshire, Ystradowen as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ystradowen, and the engine started?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Given any running time, it travels to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and pipework.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from King Field Ystradowen or halfway across Ystradowen.

When safe, pull over and switch it off — with no turning it on again to test.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M4, under 10 miles from Ystradowen, the first junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why a hop across Ystradowen to park beside Ebenezer and a drive of under 15 miles for Swansea are such distinct jobs.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush after the engine has been run.

Spotted quickly, it very rarely leaves permanent damage.

## Ystradowen: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that is a street beside The Mission, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Ystradowen, and the van comes to it.

The work depends on three answers, which our technicians get first — which fluid went in, the quantity, and if the motor has turned over.

Right there, your tank is then drained, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, the flush counts: the whole system is cleaned right through since what remains will not flush away unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then your car is tested.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the last step.

Whether it is a parking bay by Ammanford or a driveway in Ystradowen, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

Before leaving, we make sure it's running correctly with new diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has stopped, and it never has to go to a garage.

At the end, there is the paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Ystradowen sits at an elevation of 161 metres, with the nearby cities of Swansea and the surrounding countryside influencing its development. ## AdBlue drains across Ystradowen and Carmarthenshire

Cwmllynfell, Cefn-bryn-brain and Cwm-twrch Uchaf are among the towns near Ystradowen that the same teams reach, together with much of Carmarthenshire beyond, over the SA postcode area.

Near a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain? Checking beats assuming, and so ring.

Wherever the car stands — a driveway at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our technicians empty it there, and there's no need to take it to us; that suits Ystradowen, a village, well.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ystradowen: the cost of fixing it

Because each jobs vary, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

Whether the motor has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open drive is simpler for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Palleg Golf Course.

That's why each call from Ystradowen starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it has run.

Given them, a range narrows to a single firm figure.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## Alongside your car around Ystradowen, right now?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, the amount, and whether the engine ran are everything our technicians ask. Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder throughout Carmarthenshire, Ystradowen included.
