# Aberaman: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up the motor. While the fuel is still in your tank and the motor has not yet run, a tank drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they are, across Aberaman and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Call us before anything else starts, and you'll hear what happens after that.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car — and do not believe it when it runs. This is the bit most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine given diesel typically just won't run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives off just fine for a few miles. It is not okay. It is wearing the fuel system as you drive.

- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel performs two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime that system, which carries that petrol out of the tank then into just those parts.

- Do not put diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it simply leaves you a larger tank of the same blend. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A vehicle that has not shifted is the simplest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Mount Hill Street? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started diesel.

- Get your whereabouts ready before you ring. A postcode beginning CF44 6 and whatever is next to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.

- Three replies shape your whole call-out: the stuff you poured in, the approximate measure involved, plus if anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Do not take it home. The drive in has already sent a real amount of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would close to double it for no reason at all. Ring us from the platform if that is easier. We never need you standing over your car at Cwmbach while our technicians work, and our team would far rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A fair share of this work gets finished at the pump, since that is where it often kicks off.

Still at Asda? Then that is usually where it gets done. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

A forecourt is the one spot it is stopped before the motor has fired.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the filter and the lines together with your tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Move it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they normally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Starting the car just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Audi A4, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Asda now. Time passed is not the thing we need. Fuel sucked by the pump is.

## Places our vans reach in Aberaman

The same rounds carry us to Godreaman, Cwmbach, Aberdare, Abercwmboi and Cwmaman besides Aberaman, which is a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places in Rhondda Cynon Taf, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list means nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, particularly on the boundary or somewhere your phone fails. Contact us and check.

That map shows the patch the page includes.

Your car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Roadside call-outs around Aberaman

The chance to pull over somewhere sensible does not come to everybody.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Regent Street because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you remain with your car or move clear of it turns on if being in it seems safe.

Do not restart the motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging that blend further into your fuel system.

A van coming to a difficult spot is no problem for us, and it's far better for the car than pressing on.

You drive off at the end, once our engineers have fired it up and made sure it runs properly on clean diesel, with the fuel system bled. Before that, in the car park outside The Rock, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, your lines get flushed and the filter comes off where your Dacia Duster has a serviceable one. It all begins with three questions when our engineers get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

The local M4 is the one that matters now, and lies under 15 miles from Aberaman.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the signs when they arrive are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the first junction that is sensible, pull up there, and never restart the car to move it.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what we bring.

Here is the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual Hay Field call — a diesel BMW 1 Series, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it escapes past those clearances and not building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than your engine was built round. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped acting like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where's Aberaman?

Aberaman is a suburban area situated on the banks of the River Cynon in Rhondda Cynon Taf, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. Aberaman sits at an elevation of 139 metres, looking out over the surrounding valleys and hills of south Wales. Aberaman is located near the towns of Aberdare and Godreaman, and is within commuting distance of Cardiff, the capital city of Wales.

## What comes next when our technicians arrive with you in Aberaman

- The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of it, and whether your engine has run.

- The tank gets cleared of everything.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that created the trouble.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Your engine is started and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been noticed soon, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, parked near Gateway Church. For a diesel Peugeot 208 whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Ring us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, really — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get purged and not just your tank cleared.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Aberaman

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this issue under it is a different one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Aberaman page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Aberaman prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the figure is listed below, because this job is not one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single number on this page.

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

## Aberaman drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Aberaman, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the site's permission we attend Texaco and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run counts much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what moves the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It isn't a modification, so a drain then flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

Your pump still has to put up with it, because the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You do not need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

Shut off is the way it stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining misfilled vehicles, Aberaman and the rest of Rhondda Cynon Taf, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
