# Airdrie: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Airdrie and the remainder of North Lanarkshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and cleans it where it sits, whether by a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

Contact us so we can explain what comes from here before you try anything else.

## What to do now about petrol in a diesel

- Don't fire it up — and do not trust it if it starts. Here is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor fed diesel typically just can't run, so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and drives away quite happily for a couple of miles. It is not okay. It is wearing your fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it ignites it lubricates your high-pressure fuel pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime your system, which moves this petrol out of that tank then into just those components.

- Never dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Bank Street, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Before you dial, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode that starts ML6 6 — that is what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Three answers determine the entire visit: the fuel you put in, the ballpark measure of it, plus whether anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of the job gets completed at a forecourt, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

We work on garage forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent, and so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain happens.

A filling station is the one location the mistake gets stopped before your motor has run.

Everywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for your key.

The attendants will normally help you push the car out from the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Firing it for four car lengths? Never.

## Airdrie and the towns next to it

The same trips carry us to Gartlea, Rawyards, Whinhall, Cairnhill and Burnfoot along with Airdrie, which is a riverside town.

There are pages for most towns around North Lanarkshire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from this list means nothing at all about if our engineers come.

On a boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Phone to check instead of presuming.

The patch the page includes appears on the map.

All of it is ground we work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring your vehicle anywhere.

Somebody will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a hassle; the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Every restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into your pump. Stay put, let everyone moan, and give us a call.

## Stranded at the roadside anywhere around Airdrie?

Not everybody gets a safe spot to pull in.

If you realised after setting off and landed by the verge of Graham Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us rather than an unusual one.

Clear of your car if it's not safe to wait in it, with it when it is.

Do not fire up your engine to limp the car somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the system.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult spot, and that's no problem for us.

Your Nissan Qashqai stays where it is in the car park at The Broomknowe Bar for the whole job, which usually runs like this. First our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those answers. That tank is emptied of the tainted mix, the lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it is a replaceable one. With fresh diesel in and your system primed, your car is fired up and tested, and once it's running properly you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

Here is where your M8 comes in, under 3 miles away from Airdrie.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will often get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the next safe exit, switch off, and never start the car to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through the filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

## Airdrie itself

Airdrie is a town situated on the riverside in North Lanarkshire, with a mix of flat housing and other residential areas, lying about 9.9 miles east of Glasgow. Airdrie sits at an elevation of around 129 metres, near the smaller communities of Gartlea, Rawyards, and Whinhall. Airdrie has a population of approximately 22,227 people, making it a significant urban centre in the region. Airdrie is located about 339.8 miles northwest of London, in the central Scottish lowlands.

## What we do when we reach you around Airdrie

- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- That tank gets emptied of it.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left afterwards is not the thing that started the problem.

- We put fresh diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- When it is fired up, we check it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the till receipt, and left your diesel Mercedes E-Class up close to Airdrie Arts Centre a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Ring us and leave the car off. The short hop really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has reached the filter and your pump — which is why we flush the lines instead of only draining the tank.

## Airdrie AdBlue removal is a distinct job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while this fault beneath it is a different one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on is taken away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Airdrie page. Both are ours to deal with.

Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a misfilled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, near Airdrie Public Library & Observatory or anywhere else, and never restart it to find a better spot.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Airdrie

Our technicians cannot put one number on this page truthfully, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that proportion.

- The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

Put right and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the system: our engineers flush it, and take the filter off where there's a workable one. Compare that with the sure of themselves suggestion you'll get — drain it, refill with clean diesel. Only half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Vauxhall Astra close to Airdrie Library and it will start, which is exactly why the advice sounds plausible. Then the engine sucks the petrol left behind in your filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because emptying a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Phone us instead.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Airdrie motorists

## At a petrol station around Airdrie, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this gets done.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more commonly than drivers fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Your engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it stay that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across North Lanarkshire and around Airdrie: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
