# Alltour: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, don't. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet been started, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Alltour or the remainder of Highland, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our team shall tell you what the next part will be. Phone — it comes before all else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And having started, don't depend on it: your fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Turning the ignition on usually primes that system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition be.

- Do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage as that advice presumes, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Insh Road, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a motor that never moved.

- Before you dial, gather your location. Anything closest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode starting PH34 4 — that's what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Three facts decide the full job: the stuff you put in, the approximate amount involved, plus if anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## On the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the job often starts, and where a good chunk of that ends.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is typically where it gets done. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere but a forecourt can it be spotted with the engine still untouched.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key are what determine that.

Move the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

Our technicians will head your way, empty the tank, clean those fuel lines then put fresh diesel in so you can head home. So if petrol went into the diesel Renault Clio in Alltour and you are sat at M&S Foodhall with a boot full of shopping, phone us — and never start the car again to exit that space. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little fuel, which is why such jobs tend to be the easy cases.

## Alltour and the places beside it

Alltour is a small village, so our vans go out to the town and to anywhere by it on the usual journeys: Spean Bridge, Aonachan, Highbridge, Inverroy and Stronaba.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for most towns around Highland, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Ring us and check instead of presuming — county lines above all, and anywhere your phone might get wrong.

Look at the map for the ground shown on this page.

Your vehicle doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Nothing tells you, because from behind the wheel there is nothing to be warned about. The diesel BMW 3 Series will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle generally refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the lubrication its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

## Stranded at the kerbside somewhere around Alltour?

Not everybody has a chance to pull over somewhere safe.

Set off, then realised? Finished up by the verge on Morrison Avenue, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle when it's not wise to be there, with it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Our van driving to an awkward spot is no trouble for us, and it is a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Your Ford Focus stays where it is in the car park at Commando Bar for the whole job, which normally runs like this. First our technicians ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that much of the work depends on those replies. Your tank is emptied of the contaminated mixture, your lines are flushed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and your system bled, the vehicle is started and tested, and once it's running correctly you drive away.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

Your M9 is the road which counts now, and runs over 50 miles from Alltour.

A drop in power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the first safe junction and turn off.

It affects what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the injectors.

## A little about Alltour

Alltour is a small locality in the Scottish Highlands, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 62 metres. Alltour lies near the villages of Spean Bridge and Aonachan, and is connected to the nearby city of Inverness, which is 48 miles away. Alltour has a population of around 561 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Alltour is also relatively distant from major cities like London, being around 419 miles away.

## What follows when we get to you in Alltour

- We check what got in, how much, and if the motor has run. The answers shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Out goes the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- The engine is started and checked to be sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to set off.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been caught early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Why so blunt about leaving the keys alone? Because your pump is ahead of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it loses on with your fuel. Phone us. Leave the Audi A3 by Spean Bridge Community Centre.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Alltour

The issue is not the same, though the first rule is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Alltour has its own page with the details — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

Turn off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by Saint Joseph's Catholic Church or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfilled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what's wrong.

## Alltour prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single figure fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here's what changes it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank takes.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Alltour motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt around Alltour. Can you drain it on the spot?

Plenty of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It is salvageable much more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no.

The pump still has to put up with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Waiting next to it?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and keep it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Alltour and across Highland.
