# Annaclone: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Never start the engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that's decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Annaclone and the rest of County Down, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

One call our way is sufficient: our technicians will tell you what happens from here. Try this right away.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So never fire it up. And once started, do not trust it: the fuel system is wearing whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition off also: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Don't put diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not accept petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We'd rather drive to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Dunskey Street, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Before you dial, get your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning BT32 5 — that is what determines whether our van turns up or circles.

- What was put in, approximately how much, and if the motor has run — the three facts shape the entire call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, typically. Often enough it finishes there as well.

We work on station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission, and so if you're still at the nearest petrol station that is normally where the drain happens.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one location the mistake ends up spotted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still deal with it where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between reading your receipt and going for your key.

Push the vehicle out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking it just to roll four car lengths isn't.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at the local shops now. Time gone by isn't the thing we need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

## Do our engineers cover your end of Annaclone?

Monteith, Katesbridge, Ballela, Moneyslane, Banbridge — all of them on our trips that carry us over to Annaclone itself, a small village.

There are dedicated pages for most locations in County Down, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing about if our engineers come.

Guessing is the habit to resist, particularly on the border or anywhere your phone struggles. Contact us to ask.

Check our map for the patch shown here.

Your car never needs to move to us. We work over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine by the local primary school, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, motor off, phone. Three miles in your Dacia Duster feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel to demand — and a hurried morning drive needs plenty.

## Annaclone: stuck where you pulled up

The opportunity to pull in somewhere suitable does not come to everybody.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up along the verge of South Crescent, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Wait beside it. Not okay? Move out and away from it.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: start it up to reach somewhere better and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

Our van driving to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it is far better for the car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has gone

over 50 miles out of Annaclone, the M77 is what counts now.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol weakens diesel, and thinner fuel leaks past the precision components that are meant to build that pressure, and so the farther a diesel BMW 5 Series drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and gutless on the way back is how the drive to the green space at the edge of the village went, then, and your tank is the place to look. Pull in somewhere safe, turn off and phone us.

## What our technicians do when our technicians arrive with you in Annaclone

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that got in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Away goes the contaminated fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains after that isn't the thing that started the problem.

- Our technicians put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- Once it's started, our technicians check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

All of it is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Three things help when you phone from near the centre: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether your engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot we work, so the location itself is seldom the problem — we'd much rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a vehicle that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Vauxhall Astra, change the filter where there's a workable one, flush your lines then put clean fuel through the whole system, because by this point the worst of it is sitting in the lines rather than in your tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Annaclone is a distinct job

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the opening step is unchanged — never fire it up — yet the fault isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and deposits in its place.

Both are ours. There is a separate Annaclone page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Annaclone

What shifts the figure is laid out below, because the job isn't one job and we cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and whether it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in your filter, the lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Peugeot 208 that got near the far end of the built-up part needs the circuit flushed, not emptied.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Annaclone motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Annaclone?

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if your fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more often than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't turn your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that.

Cold and still, a car is in the best place available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

Draining wrongly fuelled motors, Annaclone and the rest of County Down, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
