# Ansdell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up your engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not yet run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Ansdell or the rest of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Contact us so our engineers shall explain what happens from here before you try much else.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the vehicle — and never believe it when it runs. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just will not run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel given petrol usually starts, idles and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is wearing out your fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the ignition off also: flicking it on is commonly enough to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from your tank into precisely those components.

- Never water down it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- We would sooner get to a tricky location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is simpler to deal with than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Fylde Road, that means hazards on and keep it.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode starting FY8 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Three answers shape your whole call-out: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether anything has been turning since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel on the forecourt?

The work begins at a forecourt, usually. Quite often the job ends on site as well.

The drain normally gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's consent, that is somewhere we work, and routinely.

No place except a forecourt can this be stopped with your engine still cold.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for your key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where the car stands.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the vehicle. Well worth doing.

Cranking the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Car parks like the one at Co-Op are a place our technicians visit all the time, and the fuel is hardly ever the difficult part. The bay is: motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, occasionally a height bar on the way in that determines if a technician can reach you at all. So tell us how boxed in you are when you call, and which way the car is facing. Where our engineers cannot work next to your diesel Renault Megane we will move it without firing it — and that isn't pedantry about a handful of seconds of running. Every start primes that fuel system and pulls more of the blend out of your tank and towards your pump, so a vehicle shuffled twice into a better space has quietly turned into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped.

## Ansdell plus the places beside it

Fairhaven, Hey Houses, Lytham, Higher Ballam, Lytham St Annes — each of those on our trips that carry us over to Ansdell as well, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we never come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Lancashire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Assuming is the thing to skip, above all on a border or somewhere your satnav fails. Contact us to ask.

The patch the page spans sits on this map.

Your car never needs to come to us. We work over every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Ansdell: stuck where you parked

The opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible doesn't fall to everyone.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up by the verge beside Albany Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Stay with your car when it's safe to sit inside, yet clear of it when it is not.

Do not start it up to reach a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the fuel system.

However tricky the spot, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the car than pressing on.

A diesel Nissan Qashqai in the parking area at The Blossoms carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job, right up till somebody drives it home. Park it overnight then call us in the morning. Nothing deteriorates whilst it sits. What we'll ask about is if that drive there was brief and cold, as that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and whatever doesn't burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the local M55 comes in — under 5 miles from Ansdell.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they appear are usually a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Don't start it to move it. Get off at the first sensible junction then turn off.

It affects what our technicians bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors.

Standing still, it gets no worse. Your pump is not turning, and so whatever happened on the way to Lansdowne Road Park in that diesel Mercedes E-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just don't take it home on your engine to find more of that.

## About Ansdell

Ansdell is a coastal suburban area in Lancashire, situated near the towns of Lytham and Fairhaven. Ansdell has a relatively low elevation of 11 metres above sea level and is located approximately 12 miles from Preston. Ansdell is characterised by its semi-detached housing stock and forms part of the larger residential area surrounding Lytham. Ansdell is home to around 4230 people and is close to the nearby communities of Hey Houses.

## What we do when our engineers reach you around Ansdell

- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what got in, how much of it, and whether your motor has run.

- Out comes the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clean the fuel filter, so what's remaining in the system isn't what caused the trouble.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it's running correctly.

Your car is then ready for you to pull away.

We do all of this wherever your car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, it is very uncommon for there to be lasting damage.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Audi A3 left by St Joseph's barely two streets on. Call us, then leave the vehicle off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence cleaning the fuel lines rather than only emptying that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Ansdell?

The fault isn't the same, though the first rule is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Ansdell page. Both are ours to handle.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some agreements want the firm to authorise the work, and that is much faster dealt with up front than afterwards. Then phone us about the Vauxhall Astra, the diesel one, by Ansdell Library. Do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was — almost nobody can two days into a car, and it is something we work out there. The reason for asking: harm from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mix, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Ansdell costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Truthfully, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

If it's not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Ansdell motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Ansdell. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a large share of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's consent our technicians work at Texaco and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off, and keep the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more commonly than people fear.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Not at all. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Still with your car?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more commonly than people expect.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining around Ansdell and throughout Lancashire.
