# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ardboe? Don't Start It

Don't start the engine. If the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that is determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, across Ardboe and the rest of County Tyrone, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

One ring our way will be enough: we can explain what follows from here. Make that first.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- Don't crank it. Started anyway? Then never believe it. Diesel in a petrol car generally cannot run, so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for several miles. Most people get that reversed. It is not okay — the fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for precisely those parts.

- Do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to sort, and we'd sooner come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Heugh Road, put your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning BT80 0 — that's what settles whether the technician turns up or circles.

- Three replies settle your whole visit: the liquid you tipped in, the rough volume involved, plus if it has been running since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

## Removing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Much of the work starts at a forecourt, meaning a good share of it is done there.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is usually where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the station.

Nowhere other than the forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the motor still unrun.

We can still put it right where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Staff will normally help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Welcome the offer.

Rolling it four spaces doesn't warrant cranking it.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Renault Megane around Ardboe and you are now stuck at the local shops with a boot packed with shopping, call us. Don't start the car once more to leave that spot. We'll come to you, empty your tank, purge the fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at easy throttle pulls little of it, which is why those tend to be the straightforward jobs.

## Service around Ardboe

The same runs get us to Moortown, Derrycrin, Coagh, Ballyronan and Drummullan along with Ardboe, which is a small village.

If yours is not on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for the majority of locations in County Tyrone, and the ones mentioned above are simply the nearest neighbours.

On a boundary, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us and check instead of guessing.

Use our map for the ground shown on this page.

All of it is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a driveway, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

You'll be told to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Please don't. On the zig-zags at the local primary school, a misfilled Peugeot 308 running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Start it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the lines, every prime drags more petrol past the filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Phone us.

## Stopped by the kerb anywhere in Ardboe?

Not everyone gets a suitable spot to pull in.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Chalet Road since you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you stay with the motor or keep away from it rests on if sitting there seems wise.

Never fire it up to reach a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system.

Our van heading to a tricky spot is no problem for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Three answers settle much of the work: what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach your car in the car park by the pub in the village. After that the contaminated blend comes out of the tank, the lines are rinsed, and where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and the fuel system primed, our engineers start it and make sure it runs smoothly before you pull away.

## Run it already? Stop, then see below

The M77 is the road that counts here, and lies over 50 miles from Ardboe.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that is safe, stop there, and don't restart the car to move it.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

## Where is Ardboe?

Ardboe is a small locality in County Tyrone, situated inland at an elevation of 17 metres, and is located near the villages of Moortown and Derrycrin. Ardboe is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Ardboe sits approximately 19 miles from Armagh, the nearest city, and is part of a wider network of small communities in the area.

## What follows when our engineers get to you around Ardboe

- We check what got in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- Your tank is emptied completely.

- What is left in the fuel system should not be what caused the problem, and so the lines get rinsed and your filter cleaned.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime your system.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers check that it is running smoothly.

After that it is ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very unusual.

Leave the BMW 5 Series near the centre then ring us. We're firm about not driving on as a worn pump gives off, and what it gives off moves onward with the fuel to your injectors further along.

## Ardboe AdBlue removal is a different job

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your engine stays off — whereas the fault underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal in Ardboe has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. Our technicians handle both.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Ardboe?

Honestly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is good for that.

Somebody confident will tell you to drain it and put clean diesel in. Half true, that. Try it on a diesel Kia Sportage near the far end of the built-up part and the motor will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here's the trouble: there's petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing the engine does is suck it back through your pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left the tank. Phone us. The system gets rinsed, the filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed motor from one that just starts.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in Ardboe

## Fuel drains on a Ardboe petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and leave the car off.

It's fixable much more frequently than motorists assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a modification and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a separate problem and it does not replace what petrol has diluted.

The pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There's no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## Still with the car?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and let it stay that way.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Ardboe and across County Tyrone.
