# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ash Green? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Ash Green and the remainder of Surrey. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Our engineers will tell you what your next move is. Contact us — that goes before everything else.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and never trust it when it runs. Here is the bit people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and drives away without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It is wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition off too. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it greases your injection pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is usually all it takes to prime that system, which draws the petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would rather get to a tricky location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a vehicle that has not shifted. On the verge on Ash Green Lane East, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Before you ring, gather your location. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting GU12 6 — that's what decides whether the van shows up or circles.

- What was put in, roughly how many litres, plus if the car has started — the three replies decide the entire job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

Quarter past eight. A quick fill-up on the trip in. Close to eleven it hits you, and by then your diesel Volkswagen Golf has stood at Ash for three hours. Call us and keep the car where it stands. What matters is the trip in, because diesel both ignites and — before that — lubricates your pump and your injectors, but petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles ran the pump on a fuel robbed of a lot of its protection, and no volume of sitting in a car park gives any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys alone until our engineers turn up.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel at the forecourt

A large share of this job is done at the pump, as that is where it usually starts.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at JET that is generally where the drain happens.

Before the engine has fired — a garage is the one location it gets spotted.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where your car is.

The staff will normally offer to roll the car clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Rolling the car four spaces doesn't justify cranking the engine.

## Coverage around Ash Green

The same rounds carry us to Ash, Wyke, Tongham, Seale and Sandy Cross as well as Ash Green, which is a rural village.

Not on that list? It tells you nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and the majority of towns in Surrey have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Near a boundary, or anywhere your phone misreads? Call us and ask rather than assuming.

This map shows the patch the page includes.

The car does not need to come to us. We operate across every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Someone will urge you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Peugeot 308 on the zig-zags outside Ash Grange Nursery and Primary School is a nuisance; the same motor restarted three more times to be helpful is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes your lines and drags more petrol through the filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let them complain, then call us.

## Stuck by the kerbside around Ash Green

Not everyone has the chance to stop anywhere safe.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of White Lane since you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the normal kind.

Remain beside your car if it's wise to be inside, yet out of the vehicle if it is not.

Never start it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mix deeper into the system.

A technician heading to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

You drive off at the end, once our technicians have started the engine and made sure it runs smoothly on new diesel, with your system primed. Before that, in the car park at The Lion Brewery, the tainted fuel comes out of that tank, the lines get rinsed and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Everything starts with three questions when our technicians get to the car: what went in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and check this

This is where the M3 comes into it — under 10 miles away from Ash Green.

A misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they arrive are usually lost power, an uneven idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Come off at the next safe exit, turn off, and don't restart the car to move it.

It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

## All about Ash Green

Ash Green is a small village in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of around 90 metres, and is located near the villages of Ash, Wyke, and Tongham. Ash Green has a population of approximately 563 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Ash Green is also relatively close to major cities, with Chichester being about 28 miles away and London around 31 miles distant.

## Once we arrive with you in Ash Green: what happens

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that went in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- Your tank is drained of it.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- It's fired up with fresh diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

After that it is ready to pull away.

Our engineers do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been caught early, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ash Green is a different job

Don't crank it: that opening step applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system depends on.

Corrosion and build-up are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

AdBlue removal in Ash Green has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our engineers handle both.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never start it to find somewhere better — by St Peter's Centre or anywhere at all. Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Fiesta telling you what is wrong.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Ash Green?

What changes the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much your tank takes.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is good for that.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in your filter, your lines, your pump and the rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes GLC that got near Catholic Church of The Holy Angels needs the circuit cleared, not emptied.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Ash Green drivers

## Fuel drains on a Ash Green petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work gets done.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer there and then.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Across Surrey and in Ash Green: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
