# What Happens Now: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ash

Not for a second, and not for moving it: the motor remains off. Pause there.

Drained then cleaned, right where it sits: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it remains that straightforward depends on the minutes to come more than on anything else.

Here is the order of things from here, anywhere you are around Ash.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Before anything else, these — in this order.

- Ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank into the components it harms.

- Don't top it up with diesel. Adding diesel takes out nothing. You are left with a bigger tank of the same mix.

- Get your car simple to see before anything else — hazards on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.

- However short the distance, starting it to move it is the mistake. On a forecourt, push it away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to help.

- Hold on to the receipt: the grade and the rough amount are printed on it, and they're what we ask about first.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next junction if you're on the M20, under 15 miles from Ash, and stop somewhere safe — not at the services further on. Stage one comes after that.

## Every Ash fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Motor never run at all?

- Nowhere but the tank: that's where that petrol still is.

- The job is a drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle is.

- No spot is better, and it is why the first stage matters so much.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Petrol has been drawn from your tank, through your filter then into your lines.

- On a bigger run it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

- Miles is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it passes through them, and petrol does not.

In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

The parts that shift it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Ash, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A technician that circles against a van that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode beginning CT3 2 is the best start.

- The road or the car park. A road name helps — Goodban Square, or wherever you have stopped.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, so mention the landmark — such as the one at Co-op Food.

- Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and check it's diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Ash page.

- The amount: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- The miles it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's go-ahead for this work, and sorting it before our engineers turn up is quicker than after.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home with going nowhere — works as well.

## Ash fuel drain on its way? Whilst you wait

Help, however well meant, is what does the damage while you wait. So hold to these.

- Safety before your car. If it has stopped somewhere dangerous, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it is, stay with it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't fire it up. Nor does anyone checking it still does the trick, or moving it a few yards.

- None of that takes the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from the boot. So no additives.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond the tank stays where it is anyway.

- Leave the ignition off — your windows and your radio too.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one step at a time

- First, three questions: which fuel went in, the volume, and has it run? Those replies set the job, and so our price follows them.

- Out of that tank comes the polluted blend: your tank is cleared.

- The lines are flushed. If it ran, that petrol has moved beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.

- Your filter is sorted. Cleared, or swapped where your car has a usable one.

- Fresh diesel goes in, then the fuel system is primed.

- We fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and bled the fuel system, then check that it's running smoothly.

Only when it is running on clean diesel do our engineers go.

The vehicle goes back to normal use right away, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been noticed quickly.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road around Ash

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving will do.

- The first miles are the test. A dash warning, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your cue to stop and ring us once more.

- The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.

- The handle's colour isn't the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
