# Ashill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across Ashill and the rest of Norfolk. The very first thing to do is not to fire up your engine. When the engine has not been started and the fuel is still inside your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Call us and then our technicians will tell you what happens from here before you try any more.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — fine for a couple of miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not fire it up. And having started, do not rely on it: that fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition stays off too — flick it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol leaving that tank for just those parts.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice implies — so do not pour diesel on top to water down it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would sooner get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that has not moved. On the verge on The Green, that means hazards on then leave the vehicle.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting IP25 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than arriving.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what went in, roughly how many litres, and whether the engine has started. Those three facts determine your whole call-out.

The high-pressure fuel pump did that morning run working on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is designed around. Diesel greases that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So take a diesel Volkswagen Golf, fuelled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and left sitting at Harling Road until it dawns on you around eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed plenty, which is why the question our technicians put to you is about miles not time. Call us. Keep the vehicle right where it sits.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Forecourts are where the work often starts, and where a fair part of that closes.

If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that is generally where the drain takes place — we operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the one spot this gets halted.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for your key.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking it to move four car lengths is not.

Petrol in your Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Tesco, somewhere around Ashill? Then phone, and leave the motor out of that — not even to get out of the spot. Somebody comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses little, and so these are often the easy jobs.

## Places we cover in Ashill

Ashill is a rural village, and our team go out to the town and to anywhere near it on the usual trips: Saham Hills, Saham Toney, South Pickenham, Holme Hale and North Pickenham.

There are dedicated pages for nearly all places around Norfolk, and the ones listed above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing about if we come.

Presuming is the mistake to skip, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Ring us to ask.

This map shows the area the page includes.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians work on, and none of it needs your vehicle to come to us.

## Roadside stops around Ashill

The opportunity to pull in anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody.

A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge on Edward Close or at a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Wait by the vehicle if it is safe to be there, yet out of the car when it is not.

Never start up the engine to nurse the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mixture further into the fuel system.

Pressing on does the car far more harm than our van coming out to an inconvenient place, and that is no bother for us.

Three replies settle much of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we reach the car in the car park at The White Hart. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, the lines are cleaned, and where your BMW 3 Series has a replaceable filter, it comes off. Once clean diesel is in and the system primed, our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before you pull away.

## Run it already? Stop, then check below

Here is where the M11 comes into it — under 50 miles away from Ashill.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the next safe exit, switch off, and don't start the vehicle to reposition.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in the van.

## About Ashill

Ashill is a rural village in the Norfolk countryside, situated approximately 21 miles southwest of Norwich and 85 miles northeast of London. Ashill sits at an elevation of around 74 metres, surrounded by rolling hills and open farmland, with nearby places including Saham Hills and South Pickenham. Ashill has a population of around 988 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Ashill remains a quiet, residential community with a strong sense of rural identity.

## What our engineers do when our technicians reach you around Ashill

- We establish what was put in, how much, and if the motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The polluted mixture is drawn out of the tank.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

That leaves the car ready to drive away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Why we're direct about not driving on: the pump waits upstream of the fuel injectors, so whatever a wearing pump loses moves downstream with your fuel. Leave the Audi A4 close to Ashill Village Sign and ring us.

## Ashill AdBlue removal is a different matter

Never start it: that first rule holds whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Ashill page. Both are ours to deal with.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the amount of petrol reaching the injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, and so new places see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, near Ashill Community Centre or not, and we'll get to the Mercedes C-Class.

## Ashill prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Ashill drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Ashill?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: JET, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable far more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It's not an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has thinned.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Wherever your car is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your car?

Switched off is how the car remains.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting it later on.

A still, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than motorists fear.

Emptying wrongly fuelled cars, Ashill and the rest of Norfolk, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
