# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ashington? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, all over Ashington and the remainder of Northumberland. The first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

Contact us and our engineers will show you what happens from here before you try much else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not depend on it when it runs. This is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just won't run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off just fine for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's grinding the fuel system as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off too — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for exactly those parts.

- Never put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system does not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it's wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on North Seaton Road, anywhere — a difficult location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to handle than a vehicle that never moved.

- Our van arriving instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning NE63 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both prepared before you phone.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, roughly how many litres, and if your car has been turned over. Your replies decide whatever happens next.

Your high-pressure pump spent that morning commute working on a liquid that had shed a lot of the protection it is designed around. Diesel protects that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Passat, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left standing at the nearest station until the penny drops somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered a good deal, which is why the thing we ask you is about distance instead of hours. Ring us. Keep the vehicle right where it stands.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

Much of this job begins at a pump, meaning a big portion of it is finished at one.

Still at Asda? Then that's normally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the permission of the site.

The forecourt is the single location the mistake gets stopped before the engine has run.

Our technicians can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for your key are what determine that.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Well worth doing.

Firing the car just to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

The phone call our technicians hope for goes like this: diesel Audi A4, some litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off outside Heron Foods. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Will our technicians serve your end of Ashington?

Ashington is a coastal town, and so we head out to it and to anywhere around it on the usual rounds: Hirst, Stakeford, West Sleekburn, North Seaton and Woodhorn.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of locations in Northumberland have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Phone to enquire instead of assuming — county lines particularly, and anywhere the satnav might get wrong.

That map shows the area this page includes.

Your vehicle does not need to come to us. We work throughout every bit of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. Your Mercedes C-Class will have felt perfectly ordinary on the way back from Central Academy — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol car usually won't run at all: the driver stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, pulls away like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, because behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Stopped by the kerbside somewhere in Ashington?

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere sensible.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Woodhorn Road as you worked it out after setting off — our technicians take that call so often that it is the normal kind.

Out of your car if it is not wise to be in it, by it if it is.

Never start it up to reach a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the system.

A van heading to an inconvenient place is no problem for us, and it is a lot better for the car than pressing on.

What we'll ask is whether that drive there was brief and chilly, as that's where petrol is least able to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the rings and into the sump. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel BMW 5 Series standing in the car park by The Rohan Kanhai holding a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens while it stands, so leave the vehicle there overnight then call us first thing.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

This is where the A167(M) counts, under 15 miles from Ashington.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it's smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels rarely give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the mixture. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the vehicle waits, because a diesel Ford Kuga parked outside Ashington Memorial Garden is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where is Ashington?

Ashington is a coastal town in Northumberland, situated approximately 14 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne, with a population of around 19641 people. Ashington sits at a relatively low elevation of 40 metres, near the towns of Hirst, Stakeford, and West Sleekburn. Ashington has a high proportion of terraced housing, reflecting its historical development as a residential centre. Ashington is located in the North East region of England, about 260 miles north of London.

## What follows when our technicians get to you around Ashington

- Three things get checked before any quote — your fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We empty your tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Our engineers rinse the lines and clear the filter, and so what is left in the fuel system isn't what created the problem.

- The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- We turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted quickly, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Ashington?

Never crank it: that opening rule stands whether what was put in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the issue itself.

Petrol weakens the diesel and takes away the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story sits on its own Ashington page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Ashington prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is laid out below, since this job is not one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach the car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us your vehicle, the amount and whether it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

For your car at home that's going nowhere and isn't urgent, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions in Ashington

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Ashington?

Much of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes.

We work at BP and the other forecourts around town all the time, with the station's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

It is recoverable much more regularly than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Shut off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

On-site fuel draining around Ashington and throughout Northumberland — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
