# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ashtead Common? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, throughout Ashtead Common and the remainder of Surrey. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When the engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Ring us and we shall show you what comes after that before you try much else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear. That is why you do not fire it up, and why you do not trust it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine normally will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition off too: turning it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into exactly those parts.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- We'd rather travel to a difficult spot than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort than a car that has not shifted. On the verge on Preston Grove, that means hazards on then keep it.

- Find out where you are before phoning. A postcode starting KT21 2, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, roughly how many litres, and also whether the engine has fired. Those three details settle the full visit.

Quarter past eight. A hurried fill on the drive in. Around eleven it dawns on you, and by then your diesel Renault Megane has stood at Ashtead for three hours. Call us and keep it where it stands. What matters is the drive in, as diesel both ignites and — before that — greases your pump and your injectors, while petrol only ever ignites. Those couple of miles worked your pump on a fuel drained of most of its protection, and no amount of standing in a car park puts any of it back. Hence the thing we ask about distance instead of hours sitting, and hence the instruction to leave your keys alone till our engineers get there.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

The work starts at a forecourt, generally. Regularly the job ends there as well.

The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the station's agreement, that is a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

No place other than a garage can this be spotted with your motor still unrun.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still put it right where your car stands.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next customer get through. Welcome the help.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

We're in car parks like the one outside Tesco often, and it's hardly ever your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. At times a height barrier at the entrance, which determines if our van reaches you at all. So say how hemmed in you are when you call, and which way your car is pointing. If there's no room to work next to that Skoda Octavia, we move it without the engine. That's not pedantry over a couple of seconds: starts prime things, blend comes out of the tank on to your pump, and a vehicle moved twice for a roomier bay is silently a worse job than one no one touched.

## Coverage near Ashtead Common

Being a residential suburb, Ashtead Common sees a routine call, whilst the villages round about come with it on that same journey: Lower Ashtead and Pachesham Park, Leatherhead Common and Ashtead, Malden Rushett.

Our engineers still come. Those places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns across Surrey, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Assuming is the thing to skip, above all on the boundary or anywhere your phone goes wrong. Contact us and check.

This map marks the ground the page spans.

We operate at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your vehicle does not need to travel to us.

## Ashtead Common: stranded where you parked

Not everyone gets the opportunity to stop somewhere safe.

If you realised after setting off and ended up along the verge on Kelmscott Place, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Stay by the vehicle if it's safe to be in it, and out of it if it isn't.

Do not restart your engine to limp the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the fuel system.

However awkward the location, it is no problem for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than driving on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

The local M25 is the road which counts now, and it runs under a mile from Ashtead Common.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Come off at the first sensible exit and switch off.

Long run? Anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in our van.

Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through, and petrol dilutes it. That is the full mechanism, and it explains the ordinary the green space at the edge of the village call: a diesel Dacia Duster that went out there without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it needs the fuel to hold pressure, not just to burn — so when the fuel dilutes, pressure that should build and stay built starts escaping past clearances instead, and the motor gets a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. None of that is the motor failing, which is the bit worth hearing: it is your fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when the fuel is put right.

## Ashtead Common itself

Ashtead Common is a suburban area in Surrey, situated near the River Mole and close to the neighbouring communities of Lower Ashtead and Leatherhead Common. Ashtead Common sits at an elevation of around 59 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Ashtead Common is located approximately 15 miles from central London, making it a commuter-friendly location. Ashtead Common has a small population of around 731 residents, with nearby Pachesham Park also being a notable local landmark.

## What comes next when our engineers arrive with you in Ashtead Common

- Three things get checked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- That tank is cleared completely.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- Once it is turned on, our technicians check it runs properly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

There's no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is spotted quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Our engineers flush the lines instead of only draining the tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already got to the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The drive genuinely helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked up by First Ashtead Pelham Scout Group a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## Ashtead Common AdBlue removal is a separate problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the fault beneath it is a separate one altogether.

The protection a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

AdBlue removal in Ashtead Common has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more serious of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Switch off where you have stopped, and never restart it to find somewhere better — near Earthwork or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a limp throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel Mercedes E-Class telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Ashtead Common

One price would not be fair here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that proportion.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Ashtead Common motorists

## Fuel drains on a Ashtead Common petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this happens.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's agreement our engineers work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different problem. So no.

Later on? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Switched off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from much more often than drivers fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.

Call-out fuel draining in Ashtead Common and across Surrey — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
