# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Aston? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Aston and the remainder of South Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Call us before anything else happens, and you'll hear what happens after that.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — all right for a couple of miles. People have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And having started, don't believe it: your fuel system is wearing as you drive.

- Turning the ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition be.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, so remain where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Church Lane? Hazards on, then leave the car there. A tricky location works for us better than a started engine.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning S26 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of turning up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what was put in, approximately how much, and if your car has been turned over. Your responses decide everything that follows.

## Draining petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Forecourts are where this work mostly kicks off, and where a large share of that closes.

If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that's typically where this drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the station's consent.

The forecourt is the one location it is caught before the motor has run.

Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines along with the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Staff will usually help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next driver get through. Welcome the offer.

Shifting the car four lengths doesn't merit firing the motor.

The phone call we hope for goes like this: diesel BMW 3 Series, a couple of litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now turned off at Del's. What we're truly asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Places our team cover in Aston

Netherthorpe, Swallownest, Aughton, Hardwick, Wales Bar — each of these on our trips that carry us out to Aston itself, a village.

We do come. Those places above are only the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most locations across South Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Close to the border, or anywhere your phone misreads? Contact us to ask rather than presuming.

The map is the patch the page includes.

The car never needs to travel to us. Our technicians work throughout every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A diesel pump delivers fuel to demand, and a hurried morning run needs plenty — so three miles in the Audi A4 seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine by Aston Hall Junior and Infant School, already late, a receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, motor off, phone us.

## Kerbside call-outs in Aston

Some drivers find no sensible spot to stop whatsoever.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Thoresby Close because you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you sit by the motor or step away from it hangs on if sitting there seems sensible.

Don't restart your engine to nurse it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing that blend further into the fuel system.

A van coming to an inconvenient location is no trouble for us, and it's far better for your car than pressing on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

This is where the M1 comes into it — under a mile away from Aston.

Lost power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the next safe exit and switch off.

Long trip? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it changes what goes in the van.

## All about Aston

Aston is a village in South Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 107 metres, approximately 7 miles from Sheffield. Aston has a population of around 1678 people, with a predominance of semi-detached housing. Aston is located near several other small settlements, including Netherthorpe, Swallownest, and Aughton, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region. Aston is about 137 miles north of London, making it a relatively accessible rural community.

## When our technicians arrive with you around Aston: what happens

- The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- The tank is emptied of it.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what caused the issue, so the fuel lines get purged and your filter cleaned.

- The fuel system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted early, and since all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Our engineers clean the fuel lines rather than only draining the tank, and the reason is that weakened fuel has already arrived at the fuel filter and your pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The distance genuinely assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Mercedes A-Class parked up close to All Saints Church, Aston-cum-Aughton a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## Aston AdBlue removal is a different matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem underneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and deposits instead.

Both are ours. There is a separate Aston page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Rattling, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfilled diesel Peugeot 208 telling you what's wrong. Turn off where you have stopped, by Monument or anywhere else, and do not start the vehicle to find a better place.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Aston?

Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, as this job isn't one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

Tell us your car, the amount and whether it has run, and you'll get a straight answer instead of a range.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

That deadness is the fuel failing to build pressure properly, not the motor failing — and with no dashboard light for it, motors in that position normally get driven again before somebody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned lumpy, and a diesel Kia Sportage now resting by Aston Parish Hall. Turn it off then call us.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Aston

## At a petrol station around Aston, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement we work at BP and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more frequently than people fear, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a change and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with the car?

Do not turn the engine back on.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
