# Audley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the motor yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car needs while the fuel is still inside your tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Audley or the rest of Staffordshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone so our engineers will explain what follows from here before you attempt much else.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And if started, do not trust it: your fuel system is wearing down while you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — the high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is frequently enough to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Don't put diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance implies, and topping up clears nothing — it just leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to sort, and we would sooner drive to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Church Street, turn the hazards on and keep it there.

- The van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts ST7 8, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- Three details decide the whole call-out: the fuel you tipped in, the rough quantity involved, and if it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

A big chunk of the job gets finished at a pump, since that is where it mostly kicks off.

The drain generally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the owner's permission, that is somewhere our technicians work, and often.

Nowhere except a garage can this be spotted with your engine still unstarted.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is started and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and the lines together with that tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle stands. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will normally happily wheel it out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. That is worth doing.

Moving the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking it.

Diesel Volkswagen Tiguan. A few litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Turned off now, at Nisa Local. That's the call we want, because the point under it is about amount through the pump not hours on the clock.

## Audley plus the towns near it

Those same journeys bring us to Wereton, Boon Hill, The Quarry, Bignall End and Miles Green along with Audley, which is a village.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and nearly all locations across Staffordshire have a page of their own elsewhere on the site.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Contact us to ask rather than assuming.

The ground the page covers appears on our map.

All of that is ground we work: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not bring your car anywhere.

Nothing tells you, because from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. The diesel Peugeot 308 will have seemed completely usual on the way back from Ravensmead Primary School, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the wear with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump does its work without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us roughly how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

## Audley: stuck wherever you stopped

Not everybody has a chance to stop somewhere suitable.

A common call for us instead of an odd one: noticed after setting off, landed by the verge on Dean Hollow or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Remain by your car if it's wise to sit inside, and clear of the vehicle when it's not.

Do not start up the motor to limp it somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the fuel system.

We'll send the van to an awkward location without any bother, and for the vehicle that's a lot better than pressing on.

## Run it already? Pull over, then see below

under 3 miles from Audley, the local M6 is what counts now.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that is sensible, stop there, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the fuel filter, through the pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What our engineers bring differs.

## A bit about Audley

Audley is a village in Staffordshire, situated on the banks of a river at an elevation of 142 metres. Audley lies near the cities of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme, with nearby places including Wereton, Boon Hill, and The Quarry. Audley has a population of approximately 1761 residents, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Audley is located about 5.8 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and 140.9 miles from London.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Audley

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that went in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- We drain that tank of the tainted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later isn't the thing that started the trouble.

- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

There is no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted early, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left your diesel BMW 5 Series up close to Audley Library a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Ring us and leave the vehicle off. The short distance truly assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has got to the filter and your pump — which is why we rinse your lines rather than only emptying that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Audley is a distinct matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — do not crank it — yet this problem isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal around Audley has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's usually the more significant of the two. Our technicians cover both.

Knocking? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone dead? That's your misfilled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe by Audley Theatre, then leave the restarting alone.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Audley

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much the tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, is fine too.

Fixed and starting aren't the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there is a workable one. Compare that with the certain advice you will get — drain it, refill with clean diesel. Half right. Do precisely that to a diesel Ford Fiesta by Audley St. James the Great and it'll start, which is exactly why the tip sounds sensible. Then your engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, because draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

## Audley drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Audley, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it's fixable a lot more frequently than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a modification and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it doesn't replace what petrol has weakened.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

There is no need to bring it to a dealership, as we drain and clean your car wherever it is.

## Standing next to it?

Leave the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and leave it off.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.
