# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Aveley?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Aveley and the remainder of Essex. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. When the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much got in.

Contact us before everything else happens, and you'll see what follows from there.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and don't believe it if it starts. That is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel normally just can't run, and so the person stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a couple of miles. It is not fine. It's grinding your fuel system as you drive.

- Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of that tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it burns. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition alone.

- Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not moved is the easiest one to deal with, and we would rather travel to a tricky place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Mill Road, switch your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Our van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts RM15 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- What got in, about how much, and if the car has started — those three facts settle the whole job. Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the work mostly starts, and where a large share of that finishes.

We operate on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you are still at Esso that is usually where the drain gets done.

No place except a forecourt can this be halted with the engine still unrun.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and our technicians can still sort it out where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel it. Worth it.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth a start.

We are in car parks like the one at The Co-operative Food all the time, and it is rarely your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Vehicles both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which determines whether our van gets to you at all. So mention how penned in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there is no clearance to work beside the Mercedes E-Class, our engineers shift it without the engine. That isn't pedantry over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, fuel comes out of that tank towards the pump, and a vehicle shuffled twice for a nicer spot is gradually a harder job than one no one touched.

## Aveley plus the places near it

As a rural village, Aveley sees a steady call, whilst the villages round about go with it on that same run: Purfleet-on-Thames and Wennington, South Ockendon and Purfleet, West Thurrock.

We do come. Those names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places across Essex, so an absence from the list is not an absence from our coverage.

Near the border, or somewhere the satnav can't find? Contact us and check instead of assuming.

Check this map for the patch shown on this page.

We operate by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of that, and your car doesn't need to come to us.

Move it out of the gateway and deal with it later — that's what somebody will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside Aveley Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Audi A3 is a hassle and nothing worse. Fired up three more times for politeness, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes past your filter on to the pump. Let people complain. Give us a call.

## Stopped at the kerb somewhere around Aveley?

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull in.

A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: worked out after setting off, ended up by the verge beside Purfleet Road or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Out of your car when it isn't safe to wait there, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However inconvenient the spot, it's no trouble for us to get to it, and that is far better for your car than driving on.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have started the engine and checked it runs properly on clean diesel, with your system bled. Before that, in the car park outside The Top House, the contaminated fuel comes out of your tank, your lines get flushed and the fuel filter comes off where your Citroen C3 has a replaceable one. It all begins with three questions when we get to the car: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been fired up since.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has rolled

under a mile from Aveley, your M25 is what matters here.

It will often get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and switch off.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our engineers bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past gaps instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through — that is the entire process. It accounts for the ordinary Aveley Recreation Ground call too: a diesel Volkswagen Polo that went out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A little about Aveley

Aveley is a village in Essex, situated approximately 16 miles from central London and 14 miles from the city's eastern edge. Aveley sits in a relatively low-lying area at around 30 metres above sea level, near the Thames estuary and close to nearby places like Purfleet-on-Thames and South Ockendon. Aveley has a population of around 5941 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## What our engineers do when our technicians arrive with you in Aveley

- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- Your tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are purged through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that started any of this.

- Our technicians pour fresh diesel in and prime the system.

- Once it is fired up, our technicians check it runs smoothly on new diesel.

From there, you're ready to drive away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

Hardly ever the issue, the spot. On-street is the commonest location we work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you phone from close to Aveley Village Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a van can stand alongside without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then the Vauxhall Insignia gets drained, the filter changed where a workable one exists, the fuel lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the entire system — as by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Aveley?

Don't fire it up: that first step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Aveley page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Aveley

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which rests on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel: common questions around Aveley

## Fuel drains on a Aveley petrol station forecourt

A big part of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission we visit Tesco and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

It is recoverable much more often than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your vehicle?

Shut off is the way it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it afterwards.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than motorists fear, and a stationary, cold car is the best position to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Aveley and throughout Essex.
