# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Aviemore? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Aviemore or the remainder of Highland, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Call us before all else starts, and you will learn what comes next.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will typically not run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine enough for a few miles. Drivers have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not start the vehicle. And once started, do not depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Flicking the ignition on frequently primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Don't pour diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage as that advice implies, and topping up removes nothing — it just hands you a bigger tank of the same blend. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay still if it is safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on B9152, anywhere — an awkward spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Before you call, have your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts PH22 1 — that's what determines whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, approximately how much, plus if the motor has been started. Those replies shape everything that comes after.

## Forecourt drains for petrol in a diesel

The work kicks off at the pump, usually. Often enough it finishes there as well.

We work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, and so if you are still at BP that's usually where the drain takes place.

Nowhere else except the forecourt can the mistake be halted with the engine still unstarted.

Our engineers can still put it right where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that sucked fuel through the filter then into the high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, but the flush then has to go past that tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Staff will normally pitch in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the help.

Firing it to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

How much fuel the pump has sucked is what we're really asking — not how long ago any of it was. So the phone call our engineers want runs like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a couple of litres of unleaded, a couple of miles driven, now switched off outside Aldi.

## Aviemore plus the villages near it

These same trips get us to Dalfaber, Dell, Inverdruie, Granish and Coylumbridge as well as Aviemore, which is a riverside town.

Not on the list? It says nothing. The names above are just the closest few, and nearly all towns in Highland have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Call us to enquire instead of guessing, particularly when you're on the boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

Use our map for the area shown on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground we serve, and none of that requires your car to move to us.

Hazards on. Motor off. Call us. It's twenty to nine by the local primary school, you're late, and your receipt reads unleaded — and though three miles in your BMW 3 Series feels like nothing, fuel is delivered on demand, and a rushed drive needs plenty of it.

## Kerbside stops across Aviemore

Some people find no safe place to pull in whatsoever.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge beside Grampian Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards flashing? That's a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain by the vehicle or stand away from it hangs on if staying there seems wise.

Never fire up your motor to limp the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

We'll bring the van to a tricky spot without any bother, and for the car that's far better than pressing on.

Park it overnight. Phone in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Nissan Qashqai parked in the parking area outside The Winking Owl deteriorates whilst it stands, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays an easy one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The query we bring is about that run there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the engine oil.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your M90 counts, over 50 miles away from Aviemore.

It will often take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it is some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Do not restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next safe exit and switch off.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in the van.

Happy on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how the trip to Scandinavian Village went, your tank is the place to look. Petrol thins diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the further the Audi A4 drove, the less well it held that pressure. Pull in somewhere safe, switch off then call us.

## Where is Aviemore?

Aviemore is a town situated in the Scottish Highlands, on the banks of the River Spey at an elevation of 216 metres. Aviemore is located near several smaller communities, including Dalfaber, Dell, and Inverdruie, and is approximately 24.8 miles south of Inverness. Aviemore has a population of around 2861 people, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Aviemore is also a significant distance from London, at around 419.9 miles away.

## When our technicians arrive with you around Aviemore: what we do

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those responses shape what the work really is.

- Our engineers clear that tank of the tainted fuel.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what started the trouble, so the lines get purged and your filter cleaned.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- It's started with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it is running correctly.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and since all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Aviemore

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and residue in its place.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Aviemore page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Aviemore

What moves the figure is listed below, as the job is not one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank holds.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us the car, the amount and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer instead of a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

What takes place next is the trouble. Your engine at once sucks the petrol still waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put clean diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that advice is half true, as do it to a diesel Vauxhall Astra parked up, Aviemore and Rothiemurchus War Memorial say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take the filter off where your vehicle has a workable one, and that's the difference between the car being fixed and your car only starting.

## Aviemore motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Aviemore petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair share of this work gets done.

Our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is required is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — but it's recoverable far more regularly than motorists fear, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no modification at all.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different fault. So no.

Later? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Leave it turned off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than people expect, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Throughout Highland and in Aviemore: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
