# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Ballylesson

Never fire up the motor. While the petrol is still in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, a fuel drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, all over Ballylesson and the remainder of County Down, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive.

Phone before all else starts, so you'll know what comes after that.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and never depend on it when it does start. Here is the part drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel usually just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage halts with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing out the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the ignition alone also. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it lubricates your injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which moves the petrol out of your tank then into just those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- We would much rather travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to sort out than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Dunskey Street, that means hazards on and keep the vehicle.

- Before you ring, gather your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode beginning BT8 8 — that's what decides whether the van arrives or circles.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three things — what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been turned over. Those replies determine whatever follows.

Petrol in a diesel Renault Clio, sat at the nearest station since first thing? The day has cost you nothing — fuel sitting in a tank is idle. It was the journey in that drew diluted diesel through your pump. Call us before you move the car.

## At a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

Forecourts are where this work usually starts, and where a fair portion of that closes.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that is normally where it takes place. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

At a garage, it is caught with your engine never started, and nowhere else does it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a disaster, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean the lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is decided by the few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for your key.

Out from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push the vehicle. Worth doing.

Moving it four spaces does not warrant firing the motor.

## Ballylesson and the places beside it

As a small village, Ballylesson gets a frequent visit, and the areas round about go along on that same round: Edenderry and Drumbo, Drumbeg and Ballyskeagh, Dunmurry.

There are pages for most locations in County Down, and the ones listed above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing at all about whether we come.

Contact us to check instead of guessing — borders particularly, and anywhere your phone tends to get wrong.

Check the map for the area covered here.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and your car does not need to come to us.

Your diesel Nissan Qashqai will have seemed perfectly normal on the way back from the local primary school. They all do, and that is the catch with petrol in a diesel rather than the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol car and it generally won't run, and so the person stops and the harm stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it starts, ticks over and pulls away as though nothing has happened — all the while the high-pressure fuel pump does its work without the protection your fuel is supposed to be providing. Nothing alerts you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about. Phone with about how far you went and how hard you worked it; the second answer counts more than the first.

## Broken down by the kerbside around Ballylesson

The chance to stop anywhere suitable doesn't come to everybody.

Set off, then realised? Landed along the verge on South Crescent, or sat in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Whether you remain by the motor or stand clear of it depends on whether being in it looks safe.

Never restart it to reach a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that blend deeper into the system.

We'll send the van to an awkward place without any trouble, and for the vehicle that is a lot better than carrying on.

What our technicians will ask about is if the run there was brief and chilly, as that's where petrol is least able to burn fully — and anything that does not burn can slip past the rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Audi A4 standing in the car park outside the pub in the village with a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing deteriorates while it sits, and so park it there overnight and call us next morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has rolled

The local M77 is the one that matters here, and it lies over 50 miles from Ballylesson.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first sensible junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it changes what goes in our van.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built escapes past clearances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built round. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that is the entire mechanism. It explains the ordinary the green space at the edge of the village call too: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly smoking a little. None of which is your engine failing, and that is the part worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## A bit about Ballylesson

Ballylesson is a small locality in County Down, situated inland near the city of Lisburn. Ballylesson has a relatively low elevation of 38 metres and is close to nearby places such as Edenderry, Drumbo, and Drumbeg. Ballylesson is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its suburban edge location. Ballylesson is located approximately 3.7 miles from Lisburn, making it a commuter-friendly area.

## When our engineers get to you around Ballylesson: what happens

- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Your tank gets cleared completely.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the issue.

- The system gets bled, on new diesel.

- Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs properly on clean diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and as everything is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ballylesson

The fault is not the same, though the opening rule is — do not start it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Ballylesson page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking? Lumpy idle? White smoke, throttle gone limp? That is your misfilled Vauxhall Astra, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, perhaps close to a street just off the centre, and leave the restarting alone.

## Ballylesson prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank holds.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Ballylesson

## At a petrol station in Ballylesson, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians visit another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving is what shifts the problem from your tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more frequently than people expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It's not a modification, and so a drain and flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct problem. So no.

The pump still has to live with it, as your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

No. Our engineers drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Leave the engine switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers expect, and a still, cold motor is the best position to be in.
