# Should You Worry? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Balmullo

Less than you likely are, if it hasn't been started.

Everyone around Balmullo starts with "have I ruined it?", and the fair answer is generally no: petrol left in that tank of a diesel remains harmless until priming, cranking or driving draws it into the fuel system.

Keep it like that: leave your motor off then ring Petrol in Diesel.

What petrol actually does to a diesel, how to gauge how far it's gone, and how to keep it from happening a second time: that's the remainder of this page.

## What petrol in a diesel does to your engine

Two tasks fall to diesel on its route round a motor.

Before it ignites, it protects — then it combusts.

Made to extremely fine gaps, the fuel injectors and your pump depend on the diesel flowing through them to keep their surfaces from wearing against one another.

Petrol handles the first task poorly and the second not at all.

The knocking comes from petrol being made not to ignite when compressed, which is precisely the opposite of what a diesel needs. On top of that it is thinner than diesel, it strips away the lubrication the fuel system rests on, and any pump working on such a mixture is wearing itself.

Put those together and the shape of the problem is clear.

Contact does not do the harm — movement does.

A tank with petrol in it is a fuel fault.

A pump that has been working on that petrol is the beginning of a mechanical one, and whatever a worn pump sheds moves on with the fuel to the fuel injectors further on.

## Four scenarios our engineers see around Balmullo: how bad is petrol in a diesel?

The best case there can be: filled up, not once started.

The petrol is inside that tank and just your tank, and the task is a drain and a flush where the vehicle sits. This is the one situation that can only truly occur at a forecourt, because anywhere else your car has been driven to get there.

Ignition on, or started for a second.

With your system primed, the lines and filter already contain petrol that has come from your tank.

Usually nothing more than clearing, rinsing and sorting your filter, and so still easy.

The pump now spent a few miles on diluted fuel — that's what driving it meant.

Tank, lines, filter, then clean fuel run through the whole system: that's this work, and the way the car was driven counts as much as the mileage.

Driving the kids to the local primary school is one sort of trip.

Very different a second time: a trip to Dundee, under 10 miles away, or some mileage on the M90, under 25 miles from Balmullo, where the engine kept labouring hard.

It protested, and only then stopped: smoke, rattling, a throttle gone soft, an idle gone lumpy.

What you are hearing is the engine signalling fuel that no longer behaves like diesel.

Leave it where it stops: a lay-by, a side street, the verge on School Road.

Lasting damage is very unusual when a car is pulled over soon, and the drain and flush that still go first sort it out.

## What Balmullo motorists get told about petrol in a diesel — and the myths in it

Myth: topping up to full with diesel makes it fine. It doesn't.

Nothing is removed by topping up — you are left with a bigger tank, still the same mixture.

The idea behind that advice — that diesel fuel systems tolerate petrol by percentage — is wrong.

Myth: a newer diesel copes with a bit of petrol. Rather, the reverse.

Protection counts more on modern diesels, not less, since their fuel runs through more precise components at higher pressure.

One myth that catches people off guard: if it starts and drives, it must be unharmed.

The motorist of a petrol engine fed diesel usually stops, because it will not run, and the damage stops there.

Whilst your pump grinds, a diesel fed petrol normally starts, idles and drives away as though nothing has happened.

Fine and running are not the same at all.

"A drop of two-stroke oil and drive it home" — a myth, borrowed from a fix from years ago, for a separate fault.

None of what petrol weakened gets put back by it — and later, your tank still contains that petrol.

The next start sends petrol back round the pump from the fuel lines and the fuel filter, where some of it ends up once the engine has been run. That's why a DIY tank drain doesn't sort it — a myth.

Emptying petrol into a can by the roadside is also genuinely hazardous.

## Why petrol in a diesel takes place at all

Carelessness is rarely the cause, and nobody means to do it.

One way only, since of the nozzles: the slimmer petrol one slips inside a diesel filler with almost no resistance, whereas the diesel one mostly will not fit a petrol car. That is how the forecourt makes it easy.

Habit and your car falling out of step is when it takes place.

Any motor that is new to you — a hire car, on loan as a courtesy car, or just bought.

A household with one petrol and one diesel on the drive.

Your normal forecourt, its pumps now in a different order.

A train to catch, and a hurried fill on the way to Leuchars.

Precisely the moment it occurs: after years of driving petrol, someone fills a diesel Volkswagen Passat for the first time.

Add rain, a phone call or a back seat full of kids, and the hand repeats what it has always done.

## Balmullo people: how to prevent petrol in a diesel next time

- Check the pump, not the colour. In the UK unleaded handles are usually green and diesel black, but not on each forecourt. The label is what counts.

- Plenty of motors state the fuel inside your filler flap or on the cap, so check there on your first fill in any vehicle you don't know.

- One of each in the household? Mark your key to the diesel — a coloured fob, a sticker — since meaning to remember is not enough.

- It seems silly and it does the trick: on the first fill in a new or hired car, say "diesel" aloud before you lift the nozzle off the pump.

- Thinking about something else is when this becomes an easy mistake to make, and so tuck the phone away and keep your mind on the petrol pump.

- Up to a point, a misfuel inhibitor helps: some diesels have a filler built to reject a petrol nozzle, and aftermarket devices exist for the remainder. Treat it as a backstop, and keep reading the petrol pump.

- Stop the moment you notice. Less petrol in the tank makes a weaker mixture. It does not change what to do next, which is still not to crank it.

## Petrol already in a diesel in Balmullo? Start here

Then the order of things is brief.

Starting it is out, and so is turning on the ignition.

Yet on the forecourt, at Gulf or anywhere else? Ask the staff to help you push it clear of the petrol pump.

Then ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

Corrosion and deposits are the issue with AdBlue, whereas petrol brings lost lubrication. So if it was AdBlue, say so — and read its own Balmullo page.

## One petrol in a diesel task around Balmullo costs more than another. Why?

Four separate jobs lie behind the four situations above — which is why there's no honest single quote.

Which of them you are in is mostly what moves your cost.

The proportion matters next, meaning how much of the tank is petrol, and then the location of the vehicle and whether getting to it is safe for a technician.

That is why our technicians ask three questions before pricing rather than after: what went in, how much, and whether it has run.

A range becomes a straight figure when those replies are in.
