# Balnamore: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still holding the petrol and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job needs only a drain, so leave the engine off. That result is settled in the minutes right after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that went in. Across Balnamore and the remainder of County Antrim, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone and our technicians shall explain what happens from here before you try any more.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Don't fire it up — and don't believe it if it starts. Here is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel generally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the wear halts with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, ticks over and moves off quite happily for several miles. It isn't okay. It's wearing the fuel system as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the car's ignition remains off also — flick it on and you frequently prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for just those components.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you get is a larger tank of the same blend. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay put if it is safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Wallace Cottages, anywhere — a tricky place for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Know where you are before calling. A postcode starting BT53 7, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- Three facts settle your whole job: the stuff you put in, the approximate amount involved, and if anything has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

## Clearing petrol from the diesel on the forecourt

A big chunk of the work gets completed at a forecourt, because that's where it often kicks off.

Still at the nearest petrol station? Then that's typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

Nowhere but a forecourt can this be halted with the engine still unstarted.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when the motor is fired up and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Very much worth doing.

Rolling it four bays does not warrant firing the motor.

The difficult part is that bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that settles whether a technician can get to you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at the local shops, tell us how much room there is around you and which way round the vehicle is. Those our technicians attend regularly. Should there be no space to work beside the diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, it gets rolled with the motor off, and not out of fussiness over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of the mix departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a better bay have gradually made a bigger job of what was merely a vehicle sitting still.

## Do our technicians serve your corner of Balnamore?

As a small village, Balnamore gets a frequent call, and the areas close by come with it on that same journey: Bendooragh and Ballymoney, Ballybogy and Finvoy, Aghadowey.

Not on that list? It means nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and nearly all locations around County Antrim have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Ring us and check rather than presuming, particularly where you're on the border or anywhere a satnav struggles with.

See this map for the patch shown on this page.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: the lot is ground our technicians work on, and none of it needs the vehicle to travel to us.

Put diesel in a petrol motor and generally it won't run, and so the person stops there and the wear stops with them. Reverse it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing starts, idles and drives off as though nothing had happened, whilst the high-pressure pump works without the lubrication the fuel is meant to be providing. That's the snag, and it's why the diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed completely ordinary coming back from the local primary school. They do. From the driver's seat there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing tells you. Phone us with approximately how far you went, and how hard; the second one counts more than the first.

## Balnamore: broken down where you pulled up

Some people get no safe spot to stop at all.

If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge beside Dunaverty Court, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that's a common call for us rather than an odd one.

Clear of the motor when it is not safe to be inside, with it when it is.

Do not restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into your fuel system.

However tricky the location, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than driving on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

This is where the M77 comes into it — over 50 miles away from Balnamore.

It will frequently get you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, a lumpy idle and power ebbing away — not a tidy stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and do not start the car to move it.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, because it affects what goes in our van.

Here's the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which explains the ordinary the green space at the edge of the village call — a diesel Mercedes E-Class, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; diluted, it bleeds past those tolerances rather than building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than your engine was built about. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A little about Balnamore

Balnamore is a small locality in County Antrim, situated inland at an elevation of 23 metres. Balnamore lies near the towns of Bendooragh, Ballymoney, and Ballybogy, and is approximately 30 miles from Derry. Balnamore is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its rural setting. Balnamore is a relatively small community, with a population of around 520 people.

## Our job in Balnamore, step by step

- The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if the motor has run.

- The polluted mixture is drawn out of the tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that started the issue.

- We pour fresh diesel in and bleed your system.

- Our engineers turn it on and check it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Our engineers do all of this wherever the vehicle has ended up, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Rarely the trouble, the location. On-street is the commonest place our engineers work, and a tight parking spot is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from near the centre, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and whether anything has run since you filled up. Then your BMW 1 Series gets emptied, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, your lines flushed and clean fuel put through the full system — since by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Balnamore

The fault is not the same, though the first step is — don't crank it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Balnamore page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Switch off where you have stopped, and do not start it to find somewhere better — near a street just off the centre or anywhere at all. Clattering, an uneven idle, white smoke and a soft throttle are a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra telling you what is wrong.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Balnamore

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this isn't one job. These are the things that shift it:

- This is the main one: whether the engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much that tank takes.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, works too.

## Questions our technicians hear about petrol in diesel in Balnamore

## I'm on a forecourt in Balnamore. Can you drain it here?

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work takes place.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement we work at another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been sucked right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Turn off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists assume.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate issue and it doesn't restore what petrol has weakened.

Your tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Still with the car?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let it stay that way.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more frequently than drivers fear.

Across County Antrim and in Balnamore: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
