# Bank Top: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a car needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has ended up in Bank Top or the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Our technicians will explain what the following part will be. Ring us — it comes before everything else.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and never depend on it if it fires up. Here is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel normally just can't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives off quite happily for several miles. It isn't okay. It is eating into that fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it burns it lubricates — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: switching it on is commonly all it takes to prime that system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into precisely those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same blend, since a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so don't add diesel on top to thin it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay still if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Bath Street, anywhere — an awkward spot for us beats a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Have your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode that starts BB2 2 and whatever is next to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Three details decide your whole job: the fuel you put in, the approximate measure involved, plus if it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't run it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has run through that injection pump in real quantity on the road in, and the way back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over that Volkswagen Golf outside Mill Hill (Lancs) while the work happens, and we'd very much rather talk to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel on the forecourt

A fair chunk of this work gets done at a forecourt, because that is where it usually kicks off.

The drain usually happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the site's consent, that's somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

The forecourt is the only setting the mistake can be caught before your engine has started.

We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and moved there, and that drew fuel through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from your tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Away from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the car. Very much worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? Don't.

Diesel Renault Megane. A few litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Switched off now, at Smak Polski. That's the phone call our technicians hope for, as the point under it's about amount through your pump rather than hours on the clock.

## Service in Bank Top

Wensley Fold, Witton, The Wrangling, Hollin Bank, Nova Scotia — all of those on the rounds that bring us out to Bank Top too, a residential suburb.

Our engineers still come. Those names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for the majority of towns across Lancashire, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Close to the boundary, or somewhere a satnav gets wrong? Contact us and check instead of presuming.

This map shows the area the page includes.

All of that is ground our technicians cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.

## Stranded by the kerb anywhere in Bank Top?

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in anywhere sensible.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Redlam Brow since you noticed after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the ordinary kind.

Out of the motor if it is not sensible to sit in it, beside it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere better and the mix goes further into the system with every mile covered.

However inconvenient the location, it's no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

Never chance it. The trip home from Bulls Head is entirely possible, which is exactly the trouble — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears down the components the fuel is meant to protect. Phone, then let the Nissan Qashqai stay where it sits.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a few miles

This is where your M65 comes in — under 3 miles from Bank Top.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are typically a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and don't start the car to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that reached by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in our van.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the drive to Griffin Park, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the tight gaps meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile the diesel Audi A4 covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, switch off, ring us.

## About Bank Top

Bank Top is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing. Bank Top has a population of around 8523 people and is located near other neighbourhoods such as Wensley Fold and Witton. Bank Top sits at an elevation of 105 metres, about 8 miles from Preston and 183 miles from London. Bank Top is characterized by its terraced homes and riverside setting.

## What we do when we reach you around Bank Top

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies change what the work actually is.

- The polluted mixture comes out of your tank.

- We flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, so what is remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the problem.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and checked to confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

At that point it's ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never needs to go to a workshop.

## Bank Top AdBlue removal is a different problem

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus deposits.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Bank Top page. Both are ours to handle.

The smaller petrol nozzle fits a newer diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not sloppy. Unfamiliar places see most of it for that reason. So: filled up near Bethesda without thinking, in a diesel Mercedes C-Class you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars usually get driven further before anyone realises, and miles determines how much petrol ends up at the injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs around Bank Top

What shifts the price is set out below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much that tank takes.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel in Bank Top

## I'm on a forecourt in Bank Top. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Plenty of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: EG On the Move, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

It is recoverable much more often than motorists fear, even though driving is what moves the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't a modification, so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Keep it shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in Bank Top and across Lancashire.
