# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Barlborough? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across Barlborough and the remainder of Derbyshire. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. When your engine has not run and the petrol is still sitting in your tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Phone before all else starts, and you will hear what happens from there.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the person stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine for a few miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So do not crank it. And once started, do not rely on it: your fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Flicking the car's ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what carries petrol out of your tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave your ignition off.

- Never thin it. Diesel added on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Stay still if it's wise to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on New Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- A van arriving rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode starting S43 4, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you phone.

- Three answers decide the whole job: the stuff you put in, the ballpark amount involved, and whether anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

The run in is what pushed diluted diesel through the pump. Standing still has pulled nothing. Petrol in a diesel Renault Megane, sitting at Creswell all day, rests dormant in the tank while it waits. Call us first — before the keys go in.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel at the forecourt?

A big portion of the job is finished at a forecourt, as that is where it often starts.

Still at JET? Then that's typically where it gets done. Station forecourts are normal for us, with the agreement of the site.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the one spot it gets halted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key settle how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car stands.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get past. Welcome the help.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Coverage near Barlborough

Barlborough is a rural village, and our vans are out to it and to the places around it on the same trips: Harlesthorpe, Castle View, Spinkhill, Emmett Carr and Clowne.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for the majority of locations in Derbyshire, and the ones named above are simply the closest neighbours.

Near the boundary, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Contact us and ask rather than guessing.

That map is the ground this page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that needs your vehicle to travel to us.

Put diesel in a petrol car and usually it will not run, and so the driver stops there and the wear stops with them. Swap it — petrol into a diesel — and the thing fires up, ticks over and drives off as though nothing had happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump works without the lubrication your fuel is supposed to be providing. That's the catch, and it is why your diesel Skoda Octavia will have seemed entirely ordinary coming back from Barlborough Primary School. They always do. From behind the wheel there's nothing to warn you about, and so nothing warns you. Ring us with roughly how far you travelled, and how hard; the second one matters more than the first.

## Stranded on the kerbside in Barlborough

Some people get no sensible place to pull in at all.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge on Ruthyn Avenue, or parked in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you sit with the vehicle or keep clear of it rests on if being there seems wise.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: start it up to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

We'll take our van to an inconvenient location without any fuss, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.

Three replies decide most of the work: what went in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers as soon as we arrive at the vehicle in the car park at Rose & Crown. After that the contaminated mixture comes out of your tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Nissan Qashqai has a serviceable filter, it comes off. Once fresh diesel is in and the system primed, our technicians start the engine and check it runs smoothly before you pull away.

## Run it already? Stop, then check this

The M1 is the road which matters now, and runs under a mile from Barlborough.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you feel a thing. Then it's some smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Don't restart it to move it. Come off at the next safe exit then turn off.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

## About Barlborough

Barlborough is a village in Derbyshire, situated in the East Midlands region of England, approximately 9.8 miles from Sheffield. Barlborough sits at an elevation of 153 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Harlesthorpe and Spinkhill. Barlborough has a population of around 1023 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Barlborough is located inland, about 132.5 miles north of London.

## When our technicians get to you around Barlborough: what follows

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has the motor run? Those responses shape what the work actually is.

- Our technicians drain the tank of all the polluted fuel.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clean your filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- We start it and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

After that it's ready to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, because the work is all done where your car is, and when it is caught soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, parked close to Barlborough Village Sign. For a diesel Ford Focus whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, and let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just your tank emptied.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, in Barlborough?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — do not crank it — yet this problem is not.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal in Barlborough has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers deal with both.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Barlborough

What shifts the price is laid out below, because this job isn't one job and our technicians can't truthfully put a single number on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much the tank holds.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Whether our van can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which rests on where your vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run.

If it isn't time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Drain it and put fresh diesel in — that is the tip you'll get, generally from a person sure of themselves, and it is half true. Do precisely that to a diesel Peugeot 3008 near Barlborough Heritage And Resource Centre and it would start, which is what makes the tip sound sensible. What happens next is the trouble: your engine immediately pulls the petrol still waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. We flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a serviceable one, which is the difference between the vehicle being put right and your car simply starting.

## Barlborough drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Barlborough?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this happens.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Tesco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether we can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and keep it off.

Driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's fixable far more often than people assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Never switch the engine on again.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Draining misfuelled motors, Barlborough and the rest of Derbyshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
