# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Barnstaple

If you have not started the engine yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in your tank and the engine has not yet run, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has stopped in Barnstaple or the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone and then our engineers will tell you what follows from here before you attempt anything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So never start it. And if started, do not believe it: that fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Switching the ignition on usually primes your system, and priming is what pulls petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the oiling. Leave your ignition off.

- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not shifted is the easiest one to sort out, and our team would much rather come to a tricky place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Bear Street, turn your hazards on then keep it there.

- The van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting EX31 1, and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you dial.

- Three details decide the full visit: the fuel you poured in, the rough amount involved, plus whether anything has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

How far you went is what our technicians ask about, not how long the motor has been standing — and this is why. Diesel has two tasks on its way through a motor: it ignites, and before burning it protects its injection pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a hurried fill-up on the trip in, the penny dropping at about eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Passat standing at the nearest station since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were done with the pump running on a fuel stripped of much of its protection. Phone us then keep the vehicle exactly where it is.

## Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

Plenty of the job starts at a forecourt, meaning a big share of that gets completed on site.

The drain normally happens on the spot. Still on the forecourt at BP? Given the station's consent, that's a spot we work, and routinely.

A forecourt is the one place it is stopped before your engine has started.

The few seconds between checking the till receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require flushing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still put it right where your car sits.

Clear of the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you push it. Very much worth it.

Cranking it to move four car lengths is not.

Petrol in your Ford Focus, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you at Asda, somewhere around Barnstaple? Then ring us, and leave the motor out of that — not even to exit the spot. Somebody comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile pulls little, so these tend to be the straightforward ones.

## Barnstaple plus the towns next to it

Barnstaple is a riverside town, and our technicians head out to the town and to anywhere by it on those same journeys: Pilton, Derby, Sticklepath, Raleigh and Bradiford.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for most towns across Devon, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Guessing is the habit to avoid, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Contact us to ask.

The map shows the ground this page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we work on, and none of that requires the car to travel to us.

A diesel pump meters fuel on demand, and a frantic morning drive asks for plenty — so three miles in the Mercedes C-Class feels like nothing and is not. Twenty to nine at the gates of Yeo Valley Primary School, already late, the receipt in your hand showing unleaded: hazards on, engine off, phone.

## Barnstaple: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody has a chance to pull over anywhere sensible.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Joy Street because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the usual kind.

Remain with the vehicle when it is safe to be inside, yet clear of it if it is not.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere safer and the mix goes further into the system with every mile driven.

However awkward the spot, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's far better for the vehicle than carrying on.

Do not risk it. The trip home from Corner House is quite possible, which is precisely the trouble — a diluted tank does not stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just grinds the parts the fuel is supposed to lubricate. Call us, and let the Dacia Duster stay where it is.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

The local M5 is the one which counts now, and it lies under 50 miles from Barnstaple.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

The next sensible junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 50 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, your pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It alters what we bring.

## About Barnstaple

Barnstaple is a town situated on the River Taw in north Devon, with a population of around 17957 people. Barnstaple has a mix of housing types, but is predominantly characterised by terraced homes. Barnstaple sits at a low elevation of 13 metres above sea level, close to nearby places like Pilton and Sticklepath. Barnstaple is located approximately 33 miles from Exeter, the nearest city.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Barnstaple

- Our engineers check what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- Your tank is cleared of it.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that started the issue.

- We pour new diesel in and prime the system.

- Once it is turned on, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to pull away.

All of it is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Barnstaple is a separate matter

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not fire it up — but this issue isn't.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

We cover both, and AdBlue removal around Barnstaple has its own page with the details — including why it is frequently the more significant of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Barnstaple

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that proportion.

- Which went in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and if a van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, works too.

No warning exists for this, which is why cars in that position typically get driven a second time before somebody rings. Do not be one of them. The throttle went dead and the idle turned uneven after a few streets, and the diesel Citroen C3 is now sitting near Pannier Market. Deadness there means fuel that can't build pressure correctly instead of a motor giving up. Switch off. Phone us.

## Barnstaple drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I am on a forecourt in Barnstaple. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large part of this happens.

We visit Asda and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the car off.

It is salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists expect, even though driving is what takes the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and flushing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn it on again.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than drivers assume.

Throughout Devon and in Barnstaple: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
