# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Bath

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the engine remains off. Stop there.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever the car has stopped — and nothing settles that as much as the next few minutes do.

Here is the order of things from here, wherever you're around Bath.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

Work through the following first, in this order.

- Bleeding your fuel system pulls petrol from your tank towards the components it harms, and turning your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys get taken out, and the ignition stays off altogether.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the issue. It doesn't: nothing comes out, and that tank simply holds more of the same.

- Near moving traffic? Then your hazards go on before anything else, so the vehicle is easy to spot.

- By hand, not on the engine: that is how it comes off the petrol pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the distance.

- The first question we will ask is which fuel went in and about how much — and your receipt shows both. Hold on to it.

Still on the move when you realised? Come off the M4 at the next junction if that's where you are, under 10 miles from Bath, and pull over somewhere sensible rather than pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## Has it run yet? The fork in each Bath fuel drain

From this stage on, everything comes down to a single answer.

If it has never been started:

- All the petrol remains in the tank, and just there.

- Where the car stands is usually where this work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- Being here is the best case — which is the whole point of stage one.

Engine run, however briefly?

- From your tank, past the filter, into the fuel lines: that's how far that petrol has travelled.

- A bigger run takes it right through to your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job grows with the distance — lines flushed, filter seen to, occasionally more.

Why the line falls there: diesel lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Petrol sitting in a tank harms nothing.

The parts that move it are grinding the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Bath, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Prepare a little, and the technician finds you instead of circling.

- BA2 4 plus the remainder of the postcode is the best way to start telling us where you are.

- Name the road — Northgate Street or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one at Waitrose, for example — and it is much quicker to find.

- Say what the car is — make, model — and check it is diesel.

- Which was put in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus Bath has a page for it. So tell us.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from your receipt — whichever gives us how much.

- The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it has run at all.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it is faster to settle whose motor it is before our technicians arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, your car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain around Bath

The wait is where well-intended help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Safe: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the car.

- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll it a few yards.

- Something from your boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive lifts the petrol.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond that tank remains put all the same.

- Leave the ignition off — the windows and your radio too.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

- First, three questions: which fuel went in, the quantity, and has it run? Those answers shape the job, and so the price follows them.

- Out of the tank comes the tainted mix: your tank is emptied.

- Petrol that has moved beyond that tank travels in the fuel lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are cleaned to shift it.

- Cleaned, or replaced if the car has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is sorted next.

- Fresh diesel in, and the fuel system primed.

- Our technicians start the engine only after new diesel has gone in and primed the fuel system, then check that it's running smoothly.

Till it runs on clean diesel, we stay with it.

If it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very rare, and the vehicle goes back to normal use at once.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road in Bath

- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — ordinary driving is all.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over and ring us back.

- Hold on to the paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.

Petrol in Diesel carries on from there — on your driveway, at the kerbside, on the forecourt — once you have done stage one: keys out, motor off, receipt in your pocket.
