# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Battle?

If you have not started your engine as yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still inside that tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Battle or the remainder of East Sussex, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers can show you what the next part is. Ring us — it comes before anything else.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and never trust it if it does start. Here is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel normally just won't run, so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off quite happily for several miles. It's not fine. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone as well. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates the injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching your ignition on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into just those parts.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It won't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and we would sooner drive to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Market Road, switch the hazards on then keep it there.

- Before you ring, work out your location. Anything nearest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning TN33 0 — that is what determines whether our van shows up or circles.

- What went in, approximately how much, and also if the motor has run — these three answers decide the entire job. Call 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The drive back would about double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already sent a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So keep it where it is. Ring us from the platform if that's simpler — nobody needs you hovering over the car outside the nearest station whilst our engineers work, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Pumps are where this work usually kicks off, and where a good share of it ends.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission, and so if you're still at Gulf that's normally where the drain takes place.

Before the motor has run — a garage is the one setting the mistake gets spotted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter and into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between checking the receipt and reaching for the keys.

The staff will normally help you roll the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth the risk.

The phone call our technicians hope for sounds like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, some litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now turned off outside Jempsons. What we are actually asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Places we serve in Battle

Caldbec Hill, Starrs Green, Canadia, Stevens Crouch, Telham — all of those on the rounds that bring us across to Battle too, a riverside town.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places across East Sussex, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours.

Phone and ask instead of assuming — boundaries particularly, and anywhere the satnav can struggle with.

This map shows the area this page spans.

Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to come to us.

Someone will urge you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Do not. A wrongly fuelled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags by Battle and Langton Church of England Primary School is a nuisance; the same car fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol past the fuel filter then into the pump. Leave it, let people grumble, then ring us.

## Battle: stranded where you parked

A chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everyone.

A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge beside London Road or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Out of the car when it's not wise to be inside, by it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However difficult the spot, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the vehicle than pressing on.

Three replies decide much of the work: what was put in, about how much, and whether your engine has run since. We ask for those answers when we reach the vehicle in the car park outside The King's Head. Then the polluted mixture comes out of the tank, your lines are flushed, and where your Mercedes A-Class has a serviceable filter, it comes off. When fresh diesel is in and the fuel system bled, our engineers start it and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where your M20 comes in, under 25 miles away from Battle.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they appear are generally a drop in power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

Take the first exit that is sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

Assume the worst of that on a long drive. Anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you phone. What we bring differs.

## A bit about Battle

Battle is a town situated in the valley of the River Brede in East Sussex, with Caldbec Hill to the north and Starrs Green to the east. Battle sits at an elevation of around 87 metres, near the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Battle has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Battle is located near the larger urban centre of Brighton and Hove, approximately 28 miles to the west.

## What follows when our engineers get to you around Battle

- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- The contaminated mixture is drawn out of that tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later on is not the thing that caused the problem.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets bled.

- We turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

All of this is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## Battle AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is the same — never start the vehicle — but the issue isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the protection the system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and residue.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Battle page. Both are ours to deal with.

Knocking? Uneven idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your misfuelled Vauxhall Insignia, a diesel, saying what is wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, maybe near Market Square, and leave the restarting alone.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Battle

What shifts the price is set out below, since the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single price on this page.

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a van.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run.

Not time-critical, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent questions in Battle

## I'm on a forecourt around Battle. Can you drain the vehicle here?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more commonly than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for your engine to stay off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

The pump still has to live with it, because the tank still has petrol in it later.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from far more often than motorists assume.

Emptying misfuelled vehicles, Battle and the rest of East Sussex, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
