# Behind Berry: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not turn on the motor. While the petrol is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not run, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, across Behind Berry and the remainder of Somerset, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive.

Just one ring our way will be enough: our engineers can explain what follows after this. Make this first.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — all right for a few miles. Drivers have that muddled, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not fire it up. And once started, do not depend on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Leave the ignition be also. Diesel performs two tasks: it burns, and before it burns it lubricates your high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of the tank then into exactly those components.

- Never thin it. Diesel put on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Our team would rather travel to an odd location than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to deal with than a motor that has not moved. On the verge on Mowries Court, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- Before you dial, have your position. Anything nearest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting TA11 6 — that's what determines whether the van shows up or circles.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether the motor has run. Those three replies shape the entire call-out.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

The work begins at a pump, generally. Frequently the work ends at one as well.

Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

No place other than a garage can it be halted with your motor still unstarted.

Our technicians can still put it right where it is, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys are what settle that.

The staff will generally happily push the car out from the pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing.

Shifting the car four bays does not warrant firing the motor.

The enquiry our technicians like runs like this: diesel Volkswagen Passat, a couple of litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now switched off outside Londis. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has pulled — not how long ago it was.

## Behind Berry and the towns beside it

Somerton, West End, May Pole Knap, Northfield, St Cleers — every one of these on the rounds that carry us over to Behind Berry itself, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we never come — there are pages for nearly all towns around Somerset, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Call us to enquire instead of presuming, especially if you are on a border or anywhere a satnav gets wrong.

That map marks the patch this page spans.

The car doesn't need to come to us. We operate over every bit of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes the lines and pulls more petrol past the filter and into the pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by King Ina Church of England Academy is a nuisance, whereas the same motor restarted three more times to be polite is a fuel system rather than a tank. A passer-by will tell you to move the car out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. Leave it there, let people moan, and give us a call.

## Behind Berry: stuck wherever you pulled up

The opportunity to pull over anywhere sensible does not come to everyone.

Set off, then realised? Landed by the verge beside Lisona Court, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Whether you remain beside the motor or step away from it turns on if staying in it seems sensible.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the problem: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

We'll take the van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for the vehicle that is far better than driving on.

Leave it there overnight. Ring us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Peugeot 308 standing in the parking area at The Royal Oak degrades while it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job stays a simple one right up until the moment it gets taken home. The query we arrive with is about the run there: a cold motor over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the piston rings into the engine oil.

## So you've run it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Your M5 is the one that counts now, and lies under 15 miles from Behind Berry.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power falls away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and never start the car to reposition.

It affects what we bring, and so mention it when you call: on a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors.

None of it is the motor failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it is why the normal Long Sutton Plantation call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Mercedes C-Class drives out there without complaint, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the precision components it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build then stay built escapes past tolerances, delivery turns up poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

## Behind Berry itself

Behind Berry is a suburban area in inland Somerset, situated near the city of Wells and other nearby places such as Somerton and West End. Behind Berry has a relatively low elevation of 41 metres and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Behind Berry is located approximately 11 miles from Wells and is part of the wider South West region of England.

## What our engineers do when we get to you in Behind Berry

- Our technicians find out what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Your tank is emptied of it.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the lines get purged and your filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been noticed soon, and since all of this is done where your car is, it never has to go to a garage.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Behind Berry is a distinct job

The issue isn't the same, though the first step is — do not crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Behind Berry has its own page with the full story — including why it's often the more serious of the two.

The narrower petrol nozzle goes into a newer diesel filler neck with almost no resistance at all, which makes this mechanical not careless. Unfamiliar places see most of it for that reason. So: filled up by Brunel Shopping Precinct without thinking, in a diesel BMW 5 Series you have had for two days? Ring us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anybody spots it, and miles decides how much petrol gets to the fuel injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Behind Berry?

One price would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much that tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever went in.

- Where your car is, and whether a technician can sensibly reach and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight instead of as a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't time-critical, is fine too.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Behind Berry motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Behind Berry?

Yes — forecourts are where a big part of this takes place.

Agreement from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Texaco is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there is possible.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the proportion counts too, instead of the litres.

What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

Driving shifts the trouble along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you isn't restarting the vehicle.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. It belongs to a different problem from a bygone era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

The pump still has to cope with it, because your tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull over somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than drivers assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Throughout Somerset and in Behind Berry: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
