# Bents: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch your engine on, even for a moment, to move the car. Stop; leave the vehicle off.

Hasn't been run? Then petrol in a diesel will usually be a simple drain-and-flush job wherever your vehicle has stopped — and no other factor decides that as much as these next few minutes do.

Here is the sequence of things from now, wherever you're in Bents.

## Petrol in a diesel, motor off — the first minute

First, these — in this sequence.

- Pull your keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of your tank to exactly the parts it harms, and so keep the car off wholly.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in takes away none of that petrol — it only leaves you with extra of the same mixture.

- Near moving traffic? Then the hazard lights come on before everything else, so the car is easy to see.

- By hand, never on the motor: that's how it leaves the petrol pump. Ask the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.

- Hold on to the till receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are printed on it, and they are what we ask about first.

If you were still driving when you noticed, pull over somewhere safe rather than pushing on for the services — on the M8, under 3 miles from Bents, that means the next exit. Step one comes next.

## Every Bents fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

Everything after this point rests on one answer.

Not run, not even briefly:

- The petrol sits inside the tank, and just there.

- Usually it's emptied and purged just where your car stands.

- Stage one matters for exactly this reason: it is the best spot to be in.

If your motor has been run, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left your tank by now, passed through the fuel filter, and got into your lines.

- On a longer run it has reached the high-pressure pump as well as the injectors.

- Miles is what makes it a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

That line falls there because diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol does not.

Nothing is harmed by petrol that is just sitting in a tank.

Move that petrol, though, and it wears the very parts that move it.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Bents: what to have prepared

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a technician that circles.

- EH47 8 plus the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to begin telling us where you are.

- Name the street — Redcroft Place or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- What a car park serves is the easiest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — such as the one at Aldi.

- Make and model of your car, and the fact it's a diesel.

- What was put in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Bents, so say which.

- The amount: the receipt's litres, or else how long you held the nozzle in.

- Has it run? If so, tell us how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- Hire or company car? Some agreements want the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before our engineers arrive is faster than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, your car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

## While you wait for a fuel drain around Bents

Hold to these: kindly meant help does the harm during the wait.

- Wait with the vehicle if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.

- Additives stay in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of that petrol out a second time.

- No DIY clearing. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is dangerous, and it leaves the fuel that has already gone beyond the tank.

- Leave your ignition off — the windows and your radio included.

## When the van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three queries. What was put in, how much, and if it has run. Those answers decide this job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Next your tank is emptied, so the contaminated fuel is taken out.

- If it ran, the fuel lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond that tank — so they are rinsed.

- Then your filter: changed where there's a workable one, cleared where there is not.

- Priming comes after clean diesel is in.

- We start the car only after new diesel has gone in and primed your system, then make sure that it is running correctly.

Your car has fresh diesel running through it before we leave.

It is very uncommon for a vehicle noticed quickly to be left with permanent damage, and normal driving starts again right away.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road around Bents

- Drive normally. There's nothing special to do once it's been started on fresh fuel.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may matter later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the paperwork.

- Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
