# Bewdley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up the motor. If the petrol is still sitting in your tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it takes — and that gets decided in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they are, throughout Bewdley and the rest of Worcestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Phone before everything else begins, so you'll see what comes after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do now

- While you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you don't crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the harm with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave the car's ignition be also. Diesel has two roles: it burns, and before it combusts it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime that system, which moves that petrol out of that tank and into precisely those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel tipped on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Our team would much rather drive to an odd place than have it started — so if you sensibly can, stay still. Nothing is simpler to handle than a motor that has never moved. On the verge on B4190, that means hazards on and leave it.

- Get your position prepared before you call. A postcode that starts DY12 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it is the difference between the van turning up and the van circling.

- What went in, roughly how much, and also if the motor has fired — those three facts settle your whole job. Dial 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

How far you went is what we query, not how long your motor has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before burning it greases its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol does the first only. So a quick fill-up on the drive in, it dawning on you somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane parked at Kidderminster since quarter past eight tells us those few miles were travelled with the pump running on a fuel drained of much of its protection. Phone then leave the car exactly where it is.

## At a forecourt: draining petrol from the diesel

It begins at the pump, usually. Often enough the work finishes there too.

Still at Texaco? Then that is usually where it gets done. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

At the forecourt, the mistake is caught with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, your car has been started and moved there, and that sucked fuel through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth doing.

Cranking it just for four vehicle lengths? Not a chance.

The phone call we want goes like this: diesel Skoda Octavia, a few litres of unleaded, run a couple of miles, now shut off outside The Co-operative. What we are really asking is how much fuel the pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Bewdley and the villages near it

Those same journeys carry us to Wribbenhall, Bark Hill, The Lakes, Hales Park and Catchems End besides Bewdley, which is a riverside town.

There are separate pages for the majority of places in Worcestershire, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off the list means nothing at all about whether our technicians come.

On a boundary, or anywhere your satnav misreads? Call us to ask instead of presuming.

The ground this page includes is on our map.

Your vehicle never needs to come to us. Our technicians work across the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A diesel pump supplies fuel on demand, and a rushed morning run asks for plenty — so three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing and isn't. Twenty to nine at the gates of Bewdley Primary School, running late, the receipt in your hand saying unleaded: hazards on, engine off, ring us.

## Stopped at the roadside anywhere in Bewdley?

Not everyone finds a sensible spot to pull in.

A normal call for us rather than an odd one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge of Severnside North or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you sit with your car or stand clear of it hangs on whether sitting there seems wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Our van coming to an inconvenient place is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for your car than driving on.

Risk the trip home from The Real Ale Tavern? No. It will fire up and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the trouble — a diesel on a weakened tank runs usually whilst wearing the parts the fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Peugeot 308 then call us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 10 miles out of Bewdley, the M5 is what counts now.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's sensible, stop there, and never restart it to move it.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 15 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it affects what goes in the van.

## Bewdley itself

Bewdley is a town situated on the River Severn in Worcestershire, with a population of around 9029 people. Bewdley sits at an elevation of 27 metres, close to the nearby villages of Wribbenhall and Bark Hill. Bewdley has a mix of housing types, but detached homes are particularly prevalent in the area. Bewdley is located near the popular recreational area known as The Lakes, and is within commuting distance of Worcester, which is 13.2 miles away.

## Our call-out around Bewdley, step by step

- Our engineers ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and prime your system.

- It's run with new diesel in it, and our technicians confirm that it's running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

We do all of this wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a few hundred yards, left by Bewdley Museum. For a diesel Mercedes E-Class whose motor has turned, that is about the best version there is. Phone us, then let it stand with your ignition alone. Short assists, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and your filter has had thinned fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get rinsed and not just your tank drained.

## Bewdley AdBlue removal is a different matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — never fire it up — but the problem isn't.

Petrol weakens the diesel and strips the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Bewdley page. Both are ours to handle.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Bewdley

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank can hold.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there safely?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Bewdley motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Bewdley, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good share of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers work at Esso and the other forecourts nearby regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more often than motorists expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out properly is not a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Leave the car shut off.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled cars, Bewdley and the rest of Worcestershire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
