# Birchwood Centre: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With the tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job needs only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is settled in the minutes straight after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. Throughout Birchwood Centre and the rest of Cheshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it stands, whether by a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

Phone before anything else begins, and you will learn what happens after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Never start the car. Started all the same? Then don't rely on it. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off happily, for a few miles. Motorists get that reversed. It isn't fine — the fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Flicking the ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into the pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the lubricating. Leave the ignition be.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same mix. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that has never shifted is the quickest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Ordnance Avenue? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. An awkward place suits us better than a started engine.

- Get your position ready before you call. A postcode beginning WA3 6 and whatever is next to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van arriving and our van circling.

- Three details settle the entire visit: the fuel you poured in, the ballpark volume involved, and whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

A large share of the work ends up completed at a pump, as that is where it mostly starts.

Still at BP? Then that's generally where it takes place. Petrol station forecourts are normal for us, with the consent of the station.

Nowhere else but a forecourt can it be caught with the engine still untouched.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

The attendants will generally offer to move it away from the pump so the next driver can get through. That's worth doing.

Firing the car just for four car lengths? Never.

## Birchwood Centre and the villages next to it

Birchwood, Locking Stumps, Oakwood, Birchwood Park, Risley — all of them on our journeys that take us over to Birchwood Centre too, a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That means nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all places in Cheshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Phone and ask instead of presuming, above all if you are on the boundary or anywhere your phone gets wrong.

That map shows the patch the page includes.

The vehicle never needs to come to us. We work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Each restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through the fuel filter then into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Locking Stumps Community Primary School is an inconvenience, while the same car restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the car out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it there, let them moan, and call us.

## Birchwood Centre: stranded where you stopped

A chance to stop anywhere suitable does not come to everybody.

A routine call for us instead of an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge on Talbot Close or at a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Fine there? Stay beside it. Not fine? Move out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mixture further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

A technician coming to an inconvenient spot is no problem for us, and it is much better for the car than driving on.

This is what a job in the car park by The Peacock generally looks like. Our engineers get to the vehicle, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since — those three replies determine much of the work. Then the tainted blend comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your BMW 3 Series has a serviceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our engineers fire it up, make sure it runs properly, and you set off.

## Driven it already? Stop, and read below

This is where your M6 comes in, under a mile out of Birchwood Centre.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power drains away, your idle turns lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and do not restart the car to move it.

It changes what we bring, so tell us when you ring: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Here is the full mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the tight gaps it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That's it. Which accounts for the usual Walled Garden call — a diesel Peugeot 308, out there without fuss and back down on power, lumpy at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it escapes past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the motor was engineered round. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## A little about Birchwood Centre

Birchwood Centre is a suburban area located on the riverside in Cheshire, with a mix of semi-detached housing and local amenities. Birchwood Centre sits at an elevation of 18 metres, close to the nearby communities of Birchwood, Locking Stumps, and Oakwood. Birchwood Centre is situated near Salford, which is approximately 10.5 miles away, and is part of the wider North West region. Birchwood Centre has a population of around 3564 residents.

## What our technicians do when we get to you around Birchwood Centre

- We establish what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The replies alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Out flows the tainted mixture.

- What is left in the system shouldn't be what caused the trouble, so your fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- After it's turned on, we confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Phoning from near Birchwood Leisure & Tennis Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for a van next to you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The spot itself scarcely counts: on-street is where our engineers work most, and we would much rather have a cramped space than a car a person has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Nissan Qashqai, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines rinsed, fresh fuel put round the entire system. By now the worst of it is in your lines and not the tank.

## A separate job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Birchwood Centre

Don't crank it: that opening step stands whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this fault itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Birchwood Centre page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then call us about the Ford Focus near Birchwood Library, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Almost no one can, in a vehicle they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on site. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in an almost empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that blend, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost in Birchwood Centre

One price would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, set against how much your tank takes.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

For the car at home that's going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

## Birchwood Centre motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Birchwood Centre?

A big part of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers visit Asda and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your engine has run.

What determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What next?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable far more regularly than motorists expect.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

What petrol has diluted isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a separate problem. So no.

Your tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

There's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Still with your car?

Keep the engine switched off.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle stay that way.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Across Cheshire and in Birchwood Centre: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
