# Blaby: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Blaby or the remainder of Leicestershire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our engineers can explain what your next step will be. Ring us — it goes ahead of anything else.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally refuse to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And if started, don't depend on it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition remains off also — turn it on and you commonly prime the system, and that's petrol leaving that tank for exactly those parts.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system accepts petrol by percentage. It will not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a bigger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Sit tight if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Enderby Road, anywhere — an odd spot for us beats a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.

- Our van arriving rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning LE8 4, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you dial.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three points — what got in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the engine has been turned over. Those responses decide everything that comes after.

How many miles you travelled is what we query, not how long the vehicle has been sitting — and this is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it greases its high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast fill-up on the road in, the realisation coming at about eleven, and a diesel Renault Megane standing outside South Wigston since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were travelled with the pump labouring on a fuel robbed of a great deal of its protection. Phone us and leave it precisely where it is.

## At the forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A good share of this work is finished at the pump, because that is where it usually kicks off.

If you are still at the forecourt at Texaco, that is generally where the drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's consent.

Before your motor has fired — the forecourt is the single setting the mistake is halted.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a disaster, and we sort it out where your car is. What decides it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after the till receipt was read.

The attendants will normally offer to roll the vehicle out from the petrol pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Starting it just to move four car lengths is not.

We are in car parks like the one at Aldi a lot, and it is almost never your fuel that complicates them. It is the bay. Motors both sides. Trolleys stacked up behind. Occasionally a height bar at the entrance, which decides whether a van reaches you at all. So mention how boxed in you are when you ring, and which way your car is facing. If there is no room to work beside your Volkswagen Passat, our engineers roll it without your engine. That is not pedantry over a handful of seconds: starts prime things, mixture comes out of your tank towards the pump, and a motor shuffled twice for a better space is silently a bigger job than one no one touched.

## Places our vans serve in Blaby

Those same journeys take us to Whetstone, Eyres Monsell, Glen Parva, South Wigston and Fosse Park as well as Blaby, which is a village.

If yours is not on the list that does not mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all places across Leicestershire, and the ones listed above are simply the closest neighbours.

Ring us to ask instead of guessing, above all when you're on the border or somewhere the satnav can't find.

The ground the page includes is on our map.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your vehicle never needs to move to us.

## Blaby: stuck where you pulled up

Not everybody gets the chance to stop anywhere suitable.

A normal call for us rather than a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge beside Lutterworth Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Stay with the motor if it is sensible to be there, and out of the vehicle if it's not.

Don't restart the engine to nurse it somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into your fuel system.

A technician coming to a difficult location is no bother for us, and it is a lot better for the car than driving on.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 3 miles out of Blaby, the local M1 is what counts now.

Lost power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Don't restart it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction and switch off.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything approaching the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse whilst the car sits, since a diesel Peugeot 3008 left at Bouskell Park is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where's Blaby?

Blaby is a village situated on the banks of the River Soar in Leicestershire, with a relatively low elevation of 71 metres. Blaby lies close to the city of Leicester, being only 4.2 miles away, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Whetstone, Eyres Monsell, and Glen Parva. Blaby has a population of approximately 2346 residents, who mostly reside in semi-detached housing. Blaby is located in the East Midlands region, about 85.9 miles north of London.

## What comes next when we reach you in Blaby

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has the motor run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled from your tank.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what caused the problem, and so the lines get purged and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Your engine is fired up and checked to confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught soon, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left the diesel Audi A6 up close to Blaby Library a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Call us then leave it off. The short drive truly helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so diluted fuel has reached the filter and the pump — which is why our technicians rinse your lines instead of only clearing that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Blaby is a different job

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never start it — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up in its place.

AdBlue removal in Blaby has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is often the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Blaby

We can't put one figure on this page honestly, because the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much that tank can hold.

- The type of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether our van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

That sluggishness is the fuel failing to build pressure correctly, not the engine failing — and with no warning for it, vehicles in that position generally get driven a second time before anybody phones. Do not. A couple of streets is all it got: throttle gone limp, idle turned ragged, and a diesel BMW X1 now resting near Blaby Civic Centre. Switch the car off then phone us.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Blaby

## At a petrol station around Blaby, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work gets done.

Our technicians attend BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It depends on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether your fuel system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable far more frequently than drivers expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a different problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Petrol stays in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is the vehicle still with you?

Never switch the car back on.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfilled vehicles, Blaby and the rest of Leicestershire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
