# Blackpool: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Blackpool and the rest of Lancashire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the motor. While the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Ring us before anything else happens, so you will see what happens after that.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not fire it up — and don't believe it when it does start. That is the thing drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine given diesel usually just can't run, and so the driver stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It is not all right. It's eating into your fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it protects — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be too: flicking it on is often sufficient to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.

- Never tip diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't cope with petrol by percentage as that advice suggests, and topping up takes out nothing — it just hands you a larger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Queen Street, anywhere — a tricky location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to sort out than a motor that never moved.

- Keep your location prepared before you call. A postcode that starts FY1 2 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, and if your car has been started. Your replies decide all that comes after.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big share of the job is done at the pump, as that is where it mostly kicks off.

If you're still on the forecourt at Sainsbury's, that's normally where this drain takes place — we work on station forecourts routinely, with the owner's consent.

A forecourt is the only place it can be caught before your engine has started.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key determine how much requires rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where your car stands.

The attendants will generally happily wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get by. That's worth doing.

Cranking it to move four car lengths is not.

If you have put petrol in the diesel Renault Megane around Blackpool and you're now stuck at Heron Foods with a boot full of shopping, phone us. Do not crank it again to exit that space. Our technicians will get to you, clear the tank, clean those fuel lines and put new diesel in so you can head home. A mile or so at light throttle pulls little of it, which is why these tend to be the easy ones.

## Areas we reach in Blackpool

As a coastal town, Blackpool has a regular visit, while the places nearby come along on that same run: Queenstown and Layton, North Shore and Revoe, Little Layton.

Our engineers do come. The names above are merely the immediate neighbours, and a page exists for most places across Lancashire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Presuming is the mistake to avoid, particularly on the border or somewhere the satnav fails. Ring us to ask.

The ground the page covers appears on this map.

The vehicle does not need to travel to us. We operate throughout the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine outside Blackpool St John's Church of England Primary School, running late, and your receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, phone us. Three miles in your BMW 3 Series feels like nothing, but a diesel pump delivers fuel on demand — while a hurried morning drive demands plenty.

## Stuck on the roadside near Blackpool

Not everyone has a decent place to stop.

A common call for us rather than an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge of Dickson Road or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Clear of the vehicle while it isn't sensible to be in it, with it when it is.

Never fire it up to get to a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into your fuel system.

We will bring the van to an inconvenient place without any bother, and for the car that's much better than driving on.

The components that should be getting protected are grinding instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of it: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and moves off perfectly well. Try the drive home from Ma Kelly's? Don't. Phone then leave the Peugeot 308 where it sits.

## Run it already? Pull over, and check this

Your M55 is the one that counts here, and it sits under 5 miles from Blackpool.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power falls away, the idle turns lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Don't restart it to move it. Get off at the first sensible exit then switch off.

On a longer run — anything near the under 25 miles to the nearest city — assume the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what our technicians bring.

Here's the whole mechanism. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine tolerances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the usual Sparrow's Park call — a diesel Ford Focus, out there without complaint and back down on power, uneven at idle, possibly a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, so the fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; thinned, it bleeds past those gaps rather than building, and delivery comes weaker, later, less even than the engine was engineered around. Not a failing engine, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Blackpool itself

Blackpool is a coastal town situated in the county of Lancashire, England. It occupies a spot on the Fylde peninsula, where the land meets the Irish Sea. The town is a key part of its surrounding borough and is nestled near major cities. Blackpool's seaside location has contributed to its development as a notable settlement in the region.

## What happens when our engineers reach you around Blackpool

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that was put in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- The tank gets emptied completely.

- What is left in the fuel system shouldn't be what started the problem, and so the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter cleared.

- Bleeding the system follows, once new diesel is in.

- When it's started, our technicians make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

There is no need for a workshop at any point, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very rare.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Blackpool?

The problem isn't the same, though the opening rule is — do not fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal around Blackpool has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

Most of these happen somewhere strange, and the cause is mechanical not careless — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a current diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Vauxhall Astra, a fill-up by Grundy Art Gallery that you didn't think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol ends up at the injectors.

## Blackpool costs for a petrol-in-diesel drain

We can't put one number on this page honestly, as the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- Whether the engine has been run or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can safely reach the car and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

## Blackpool motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Blackpool?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work gets done.

Our technicians work at Shell and the other forecourts nearby routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if our technicians can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture sucked through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of that tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable a lot more frequently than motorists fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has diluted isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct issue. So no.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, since our technicians drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

Clearing misfuelled motors, Blackpool and the rest of Lancashire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
