# Blackwell: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still carrying the fuel and the engine not yet started, almost every job takes only a drain, so keep your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes straight after filling up, and not by the amount that went in. All over Blackwell and the remainder of Derbyshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and flushes it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a driveway or at a forecourt.

One ring to us will be plenty: our technicians shall tell you what happens next. Do this first.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That is why you never fire it up, and why you don't believe it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel especially — the part people get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Turning the ignition on often primes your system, and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps protected on its way through, before it burns. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition alone.

- Don't water down it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay put if it's sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Central Drive, anywhere — a difficult place for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a motor that never shifted.

- Our van showing up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning DE55 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- What was put in, about how many litres, and if the engine has fired — these three details decide your whole call-out. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Do not take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through that injection pump in real quantity on the trip in, and the way back would close to double that for nothing at all. Call us — the platform is good. There's no need to stand over that Volkswagen Tiguan at Alfreton while the work gets done, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than learn on Monday.

## Can petrol be taken from your diesel at the forecourt?

The job begins at a forecourt, generally. Quite often it wraps up on site too.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at Shell that is generally where the drain takes place.

Nowhere except the forecourt can it be halted with your engine still cold.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much requires cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

The attendants will usually help you push it out from the pump so the next customer can get by. That is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Do our technicians reach your part of Blackwell?

Westhouses, Church Hill, Newton, South Normanton, Hilcote — all of these on our journeys that take us across to Blackwell as well, a village.

Not on that list? It says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and most towns around Derbyshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

On the border, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Phone to enquire rather than assuming.

The patch the page includes is on our map.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't bring the vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck at the kerbside anywhere in Blackwell?

Not everybody has the opportunity to stop somewhere sensible.

Hazards flashing in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Oxford Street because you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Out of the motor while it isn't safe to wait in it, by it if it is.

Never fire it up to reach a safer location. It'll go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the mix deeper into your fuel system.

We'll send our van to a difficult spot without any fuss, and for your car that's far better than pressing on.

The parts that should be getting lubricated are wearing down instead, and your vehicle gives no sign of that: a diesel on a weakened tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Try the drive home from Station? Don't. Phone then leave the Peugeot 308 where it is.

## Driven it already? Pull over, then see below

This is where your M1 comes into it — under a mile away from Blackwell.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets rough, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and do not start the vehicle to reposition.

It alters what our technicians bring, so mention it when you call: on a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors.

Diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through, and petrol thins it. That's the whole mechanism, and it explains the normal Lees Lane call: a diesel Audi A4 that travelled out there without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically — it requires the fuel to hold pressure, not merely to burn — so when your fuel thins, pressure that should build then stay built starts escaping past tolerances instead, and the motor gets a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. None of that is the engine failing, which is the part worth hearing: it is the fuel no longer acting like diesel, and it stops when your fuel is sorted.

## Where's Blackwell?

Blackwell is a village in Derbyshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 118 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Blackwell lies near the communities of Westhouses, Church Hill, and Newton, and is approximately 14 miles from Nottingham. Blackwell has a population of around 1228 residents, who live in a setting that is characteristic of the East Midlands region. Blackwell is also relatively close to major cities, being around 123 miles from London.

## Once we get to you around Blackwell: what follows

- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- We clear the tank of the polluted fuel.

- What is remaining in the system should not be what started the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- Your system gets primed, on clean diesel.

- The motor is started and checked to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very rare when it has been caught early, and because all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

## Blackwell AdBlue removal is a distinct job

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the protection the fuel system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Blackwell page. Both are ours to handle.

Clattering? Ragged idle? White smoke, throttle gone soft? That is your wrongly fuelled Citroen C3, a diesel, saying what's wrong with it. Stop wherever you happen to be, possibly by Newton Methodist Church, and leave the restarting alone.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Blackwell

Frankly, no single number belongs on a page like this. The job varies. Here's what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much the tank can hold.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, that blend is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, your pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with that tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that made it near St Michael & All Angels needs the system purged, not drained.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Blackwell motorists

## Fuel drains on a Blackwell petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a fair portion of this work gets done.

Tell us which one you're at when you phone and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's permission our engineers attend Esso and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been pulled through the system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable far more frequently than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

Afterwards? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the car switched off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car after that.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Derbyshire and in Blackwell: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
