# Blenheim: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

With that tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet run, nearly every job takes only a drain, so leave the motor off. That result is settled in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that was put in. All over Blenheim and the rest of Oxfordshire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether at a roadside, on a drive or at a forecourt.

One ring our way is enough: we can tell you what happens next. Do it right away.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. This is why you don't crank it, and why you do not rely on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically can't run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it greases — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be also: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It leaves you a bigger tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system won't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to thin it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has not moved is the simplest one to sort, and we'd rather come to a difficult place than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Elm Drive, switch your hazards on and leave it there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning OX44 9, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than arriving.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how much, and also if your car has run. These three details settle the full visit.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

A good part of the work gets completed at the pump, because that is where it often starts.

The drain generally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Horspath Service Centre? Given the owner's agreement, that's a spot our technicians work, and regularly.

At a forecourt, it is stopped with the motor never started, and no place else manages it.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the key decide how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where your car stands.

Away from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the vehicle. Worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a start.

## Can our engineers reach your side of Blenheim?

These same journeys get us to Garsington, Denton, Horspath, Blackbird Leys and Toot Baldon as well as Blenheim, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places across Oxfordshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Call us to ask instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and anywhere your phone tends to get wrong.

The ground the page spans sits on our map.

We operate by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks across all of that, and your vehicle never needs to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both prepared. The Skoda Octavia will have felt completely ordinary on the way back from Garsington Church of England Primary School — they all do, and that is the catch. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the protection the fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Blenheim: broken down wherever you parked

The opportunity to pull over anywhere safe doesn't fall to everyone.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge of Oxford Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Whether you sit by your car or move away from it depends on if staying nearby is wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We will bring the van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for your car that's much better than pressing on.

Here's what a job in the car park at The Manor Bar generally looks like. We arrive at the vehicle, ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three replies decide most of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. Clean diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, check it runs correctly, and you set off.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where your Wheatley Spur counts, under 5 miles away from Blenheim.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they come are generally lost power, an uneven idle and smoke instead of a clean stop.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 5 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and mention it when you call. It changes what we bring.

None of that is the engine failing. That's the bit worth hearing, and it's why the normal Parsler's Piece call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Peugeot 3008 drives out there without fuss, comes back with the power gone, your idle rough and maybe a little smoke, and the cause is your fuel no longer acting like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting parts it flows through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure rather than only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built bleeds past gaps, delivery shows up poorer and later and less even than engineered, and all of that stops once your fuel is corrected.

## Where's Blenheim?

Blenheim is a suburban area in Oxfordshire, situated near the River Thames and close to the city of Oxford. Blenheim sits at an elevation of 76 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Blenheim is located near several other small communities, including Garsington, Denton, and Horspath, and is within commuting distance of London. Blenheim has a population of approximately 842 residents.

## What happens when our technicians get to you around Blenheim

- Our technicians check what got in, how much, and if the engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price.

- The contaminated mixture is drawn out of your tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- It's run with clean diesel in it, and our engineers confirm that it's running properly.

That leaves it ready to set off.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never needs to go to a garage.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class left close to Garsington Village Hall hardly two streets on. Ring us, and leave the car off. A short hop does genuinely help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had thinned fuel through them — hence rinsing the lines rather than only draining the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Blenheim?

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — never crank it — but this fault isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and removes the protection the fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Blenheim page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason our technicians ask at all: the same few litres sitting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger blend than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger mixture rattles more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full your tank was in a motor collected two days ago, and we work that out there. Do call the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that's far quicker settled before than after. Then phone us about the BMW 1 Series close to Jubilee Hall.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Blenheim?

What shifts the figure is set out below, because the job is not one job and our technicians cannot frankly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else counts for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank holds — that ratio.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

## Blenheim drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Blenheim. Can you drain it on the spot?

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our engineers work at Tesco and the other forecourts locally routinely, with the site's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and a lot more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, certainly. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave the car off.

It is recoverable far more frequently than people fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't an alteration and doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a different problem and it doesn't restore what petrol has diluted.

Later on? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with your vehicle?

The engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car remain that way.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than people assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Throughout Oxfordshire and around Blenheim: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
