# Blofield: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Blofield and the remainder of Norfolk. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. When your engine has not yet run and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires, and the following few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

A single ring our way is enough: our engineers can tell you what follows next. Do this first.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Don't fire it up. Started anyway? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle usually will not run, so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away normally, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't fine — your fuel system is wearing every mile you do.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it lubricates — that injection pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone too: flicking it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system won't handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests — so don't tip diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Our team would sooner come to an odd place than have it started — so if you safely can, stay put. Nothing is quicker to sort than a car that hasn't moved. On the verge on Doctors Road, that means hazards on then keep the vehicle.

- A van showing up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts NR13 4, and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you call.

- Three facts determine the entire call-out: the stuff you tipped in, the rough measure of it, and whether anything has been running since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill-up on the trip in, and you realise around eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Passat has been sitting outside Brundall for three hours. Phone and keep the car right where it stands. The journey in is the part that counts most, since diesel does two roles on its way through a motor: it combusts, and before it burns it protects its high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump running on a fuel that had lost most of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing our technicians ask is how many miles you went, not how long your car has been parked.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from a diesel

Forecourts are where the job mostly kicks off, and where a fair share of it closes.

If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that's usually where this drain gets done — we operate on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

A forecourt is the only place it can be caught before the engine has started.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through the filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the lines as well as the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we sort it out where your car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Worth it.

Firing the car over four car lengths? Don't.

Diesel Skoda Octavia. Some litres of unleaded. Run a couple of miles. Switched off now, at The Co-operative Food. That's the phone call we want, since the point under it's about volume through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Blofield plus the towns next to it

As a village, Blofield sees a routine visit, while its neighbours round about go along on that same run: Brundall and Hemblington Corner, Blofield Heath and Hemblington, Blofield Corner.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Norfolk, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from that list says nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Guessing is the habit to avoid, particularly on a border or anywhere the satnav gets lost. Phone to enquire.

The area this page spans appears on this map.

The vehicle does not need to move to us. Our technicians work across the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stuck by the roadside somewhere in Blofield?

Not everybody has the chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

Hazards going at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside North Street as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car while it is not wise to sit there, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Our van heading to an inconvenient spot is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the car than driving on.

Risk the trip home from Kings Head? No. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the problem — a diesel on a diluted tank behaves normally while wearing the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Peugeot 308 and phone.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has rolled

This is where the M11 comes into it — over 50 miles from Blofield.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's safe, stop there, and never start the car to reposition.

On a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what our technicians bring.

## Where is Blofield?

Blofield is a village situated on the River Yare in Norfolk, with a mix of old and new properties, including many detached homes. Blofield sits at an elevation of 26 metres, close to the nearby settlements of Brundall and Hemblington Corner. Blofield is located near the city of Norwich, which is approximately 6.5 miles away, and is part of the wider Eastern region of England. Blofield has a population of around 2197 residents, living in a variety of housing types, predominantly detached homes.

## What our technicians do when we arrive with you in Blofield

- Three things get asked before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- The tank is cleared of everything.

- What is left in the fuel system should not be what created the problem, and so your fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it's running properly.

After that it's ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been spotted quickly, and as all of it is done where your car is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked your diesel Mercedes E-Class up close to Blofield Library a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave the car off. The short distance really helps, but it was still a start and a drive, and so weakened fuel has got to the fuel filter and your pump — which is why we clean your lines rather than only draining your tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Blofield?

If what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first instruction is the same — never start the car — yet the issue is not.

The protection a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which thins your diesel.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it brings rust and build-up instead.

Our technicians handle both, and AdBlue removal around Blofield has its own page with the details — including why it is usually the more serious of the two.

Knocking, an uneven idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A3 telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Margaret Harker Hall or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better location.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Blofield

Truthfully, no single number fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much that tank can hold.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Whether a technician can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the vehicle is.

Tell us your car, the amount and if it has run, and you'll get a firm answer rather than a range.

For the car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

## Blofield motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Blofield, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that blend drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more regularly than people expect.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with the car?

Keep it turned off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
